Bharat NCAP Launch Tomorrow – Top Things You Need To Know
The union minister of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari will launch Bharat NCAP on August 22. This will be a major step for India in terms of improving the safety of cars manufactured and sold in the country.
According to the government, Bharat NCAP is expected to improve the safety standards of motor vehicles by up to 3.5 tonnes. That being said, here are the top things you need to know about Bharat NCAP.

Implementation: As mentioned, the Bharat NCAP testing will be launched tomorrow. However, the new safety regulations will be implemented from October 1. Also, under the new Bharat NCAP, cars made and sold in India will be tested for their crashworthiness to determine the safety quotient.
Mandate: The Bharath NCAP is a voluntary crash testing program and no manufacturers are forced to undergo these crash tests. However, OEMs are encouraged to share sample vehicles for crash-testing purposes.

Crash Tests: The vehicles used for the Bharat NCAP crash test will be provided by the OEM. However, the testing agency has the authority to pick up the model randomly from an authorised dealership.
Qualification: In order to qualify for the new Bharat NCAP crash testing, the gross weight of the vehicle should be below 3.5 tonnes. On top of that, the vehicle that is set to undergo the Bharat NCAP crash testing should be either manufactured or imported to India.

Process For Crash Tests: The process starts with the manufacturer submitting the application for crash testing along with details of the model. After accepting the application, Bharat NCAP authorities notify the manufacturer regarding the selection of the model.
Testing Parameters: 3 types of crash testing will be conducted by Bharat NCAP to assess the crashworthiness of the car - Offset Deformable Barrier Frontal Impact Test, Side Impact Test, and Pole Side Impact Test. Furthermore, the safety rating will also consider the fitment of Safety Assist Technologies.

Results: Bharat NCAP will share the result of the crash test with the OEM. This result can either be published or the manufacturer can seek a reassessment of the model.
Thoughts: The introduction of Bharat NCAP is expected to encourage automakers to develop safer cars. Moreover, it is also expected to significantly benefit car manufacturers in India as they no longer have to undergo the rather expensive Global NCAP crash testing procedure.
