Aston Martin DB12 Volante Revealed - Bond's Next Car Goes Topless
Aston Martin DB12 Volante revealed. The all-new Aston Martin DB12 Volante is the drop-top version of what the firm calls the world's first super tourer - the DB12.
Like its hardtop sibling, the DB12 Volante ditches the firm's bespoke twin-turbo 5.2-litre V12 for the 4.0-litre bi-turbo forced induction engine from the nutters from Affalterbach - Mercedes-AMG.
Like in the coupe, the AMG-sourced turbo nutter under the bonnet 671bhp at 6,000rpm and 800Nm of peak torque between 2,750-6,000rpm. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an 8-speed ZF-sourced torque converter automatic gearbox.
Despite the extra 111 kilogrammes it carries due to all the extra strengthening needed due to the chopping of the roof, the DB12 Volante is only one-tenth of a second slower from 0-100km/h completing the sprint in 3.7 seconds. The top speed remains unchanged at 325km/h.
So what has Aston Martin done to the DB12 Volante to keep it as stiff as its hardtop sibling? The DB12 Volante features reinforced suspension mounts - with the front axle now 140 per cent stiffer. This is further helped by the presence of a cross brace that runs across the engine bay.
The new DB12 Volante retains its predecessor's (DB11 Volante) K-fold soft-top roof setup. The fabric roof of the Aston Martin DB12 Volante opens in 14 seconds and closes in 16 seconds at speeds of up to 50km/h. The Volante offers a 262-litre boot; enough for the golf bag and groceries.
The interior, (like most of the exterior), has been carried over from the coupe which includes the new centrally-mounted 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The infotainment system comes connected to an 11-speaker Bowers & Wilkins speaker setup as standard. Customers can choose the more powerful 15-speaker which is available as an option.
The Aston Martin DB12 Volante will make its public debut at The Quail during Monterey Car Week with deliveries scheduled to start in Q4 2023.
