Bugatti Just Recalled One Chiron Super Sport - IT Bug To Blame?

There are car recalls that force thousands of cars back to the workshop over some issue or the other. And then there's Bugatti whose recall affects just one physics-defying hypercar that will end up costing a pretty penny to fix.

The single recalled Bugatti in this case is a Chiron Super Sport, that completed its journey in the atelier at Molsheim on the 10th of March 10, 2023, before being shipped to its home in the United States.

According to the report submitted by Bugatti with the US National Highway Transport Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected Chiron Super Sport in question was fitted with wheels from a Chiron Sport.

While most snobs would scoff at this, Bugatti is taking this recall rather seriously. According to the report, the "Leichtbaurad BBS" wheels fitted to the errant car are not validated on the Chiron Super Sport.

In fact, Bugatti claims that the wheels may cause a loss of downforce and cause the driver to lose control when the Chiron Super Sport is in 'Top Speed' mode. In other modes, the Chiron Sport is safe to use as it is only in 'Top Speed' mode that the downforce levels are reduced while lateral dynamic behaviour is also compromised.

So just how did this error occur? Well according to Bugatti, it was an issue with the final individualisation configuration step prior to the car entering production. Basically, Bugatti's IT team forgot to restrict the use of wheels not meant for the Chiron Super Sport when the owner was making his choices on the configurator.

This, in turn, meant that the owner was able to configure the aforementioned Leichtbaurad BBS wheels to his Chiron Super Sport. This was noticed only after the hypercar had been shipped out to the owner, thus the issuance of the recall.

So what is the solution? Well, Bugatti will promptly inform the owner and once the hypercar is brought to one of the firm's service centres in the United States, the wheels will be replaced.

Bugatti will swap out the wheels, tyres, tyre valves and sensors with those compliant with the Chiron Super Sport for free. And in typical Bugatti fashion, this wheel and tyre swap will take an estimated 1.5 hours to get done.

Thoughts About Bugatti's Recall

Bugatti has always been at the sharp edge of insanity when it comes to cars, especially since it came under VW Group ownership. While we do shake our heads at this blunder, we are quite glad that both the owner and the car haven't been dinged up by this error.
