Toyota Innova Hycross Will Also Be Sold As A Maruti Suzuki - Launch Set For Early Next Year
Japanese carmaker Toyota has revealed in a regulatory filing that its upcoming C-MPV, which is expected to bear the Innova Hycross name, will be shared with Maruti Suzuki as part of the global Toyota-Suzuki alliance.
Japanese carmaker Toyota has revealed in a regulatory filing that its upcoming C-MPV, which is expected to bear the Innova Hycross name, will be shared with Maruti Suzuki as part of the global Toyota-Suzuki alliance.
This will make the upcoming replacement for the current-gen Innova the first vehicle from Toyota to be rebadged as a Maruti Suzuki vehicle as part of the global alliance between the two Japanese marques - Toyota & Suzuki.
Toyota currently sells rebadged versions of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno (Glanza) hatchback and Brezza (Urban Cruiser) SUV. Even the recently launched Urban Cruiser Hyryder is a rebadged Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara despite arriving first as a Toyota and being produced at the latter's plant in Karnataka.
In the same regulatory filing, Toyota revealed that the C-SUV, which is expected to make its global debut next month will arrive in India before the end of the current 2022-23 fiscal year. With Auto Expo set for January next year, we expect that the Toyota C-MPV could make its debut at the auto show with the price announcement set for a bit later as they did with the launch of the Hyryder SUV. We expect Maruti Suzuki's version of the Innova Hycross to follow in the footsteps of its Toyota sibling soon after.
Like the previous badge-swapped offerings from the Toyota-Suzuki global alliance in India, the Maruti Suzuki version of the Innova Hycross is expected to feature a few design differences when compared to its Toyota step-sibling. We expect the design changes to fall in line with what Toyota has done with its own re-badged Maruti models. So expect the Maruti-spec Innova Hycross to feature a unique grille and lighting setup along with a different colour theme for the interior when it arrives next year.
What will remain unchanged will be the mechanical bits that underpin the vehicle including the powertrain and the Toyota TNGA-C architecture that underpins the new vehicle. The new Innova Hycross will feature a monocoque chassis instead of the ladder-frame setup that has underpinned all Innovas to date.
The powertrains sending the power to the wheels are also going to change for the Innova Hycross with the upcoming MPV set to ditch diesel for a petrol-electric hybrid setup similar to the ones we see on Toyota's other hybrid vehicles.
The Innova Hycross is expected to feature a 2.0-litre Atkinson cycle petrol engine along with electric motors that will send power to the front wheels with the help of an e-CVT gearbox.
A regular petrol-powered version of the Innova Hycross is also expected to arrive with a manual gearbox in tow.
Thoughts About The Maruti-badged Toyota Innova Hycross
Toyota's Innova Hycross will be the first-ever Toyota to wear a Suzuki badge in India. With its own take on the Innova Hycross, Suzuki will once again be heading into unknown territory for the brand in India, which should hopefully help it add quite a few more customers to its ranks.
