Top 5 Cars & SUVs Discontinued In 2022 – Duster, Polo & More

2022 has been an exciting year for automobile companies as sales figures recovered strongly after the sales slump during the Coronavirus pandemic.

That being said, 2022 has almost come to an end and unfortunately, some of the cars won't make it to see 2023. As such, here is the list of the top 5 cars and SUVs that were discontinued in the year 2022.

Top 5 Cars & SUVs Discontinued In 2022

Hyundai Santro

The second-generation Hyundai Santro had high expectations on its back. However, the entry-level hatchback failed to recreate the success of the original Santro despite the second-generation Hyundai Santro managing to rack up some decent sales figures in the initial months after its launch in India.

One of the reasons for the failure of the second-generation Hyundai Santro could be its pricing as the model was rather too expensive for an entry-level hatchback in India. Furthermore, the top-spec variants of the Hyundai Santro were more expensive than the Hyundai Grand i10 which offered a more powerful engine and more space.

Toyota Urban Cruiser

The Toyota Urban Cruiser is essentially a rebadged version of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza sub-4m SUV. Though sales averaged more than 2,000 units per month, the Japanese automaker decided to pull the plug on the Urban Cruiser as re-engineering the model based on the latest iteration of the Maruti Suzuki Brezza would be a costly affair.

Maruti Suzuki S-Cross

The Maruti Suzuki S-Cross was launched at a time when C-Segment SUVs were gaining a lot of momentum in the Indian automobile market. In fact, many customers overlooked the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross for the Hyundai Creta SUV. However, sales figures remained decent enough even for Maruti Suzuki.

While the new Suzuki S-Cross was unveiled globally, the Indo-Japanese automaker opted to launch the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV instead of launching the new S-Cross in India. So far, the decision to replace the S-Cross with Grand Vitara has paid off as the automaker continues to rack up more than decent sales figures.

Renault Duster

The Renault Duster is one of the most successful models for Renault in India. Introduced in the year 2012, the French automaker managed to sell 40,000 units of the SUV in the first year alone. In fact, the Renault Duster could be credited to commence the C-Segment SUV frenzy in India.

That being said, Renault miserably failed to carry forward the momentum of the Renault Duster SUV by failing to update the SUV as a response to new competitors. Though Renault did manage to launch an AWD variant of the Duster SUV, it was rather too late and often regarded as "outdated" in many comparisons.

Volkswagen Polo

Noting saddens car enthusiasts more in this list than Volkswagen pulling the plug on the Polo hatchback after 12-year long stint in the Indian automobile market. In fact, the Volkswagen Polo is the German automaker's most popular model in India after having sold more than 2.5 lakh examples.

During its tenure in India, though the Volkswagen Polo had received multiple updates and numerous revisions in terms of styling and powertrain system, the model continued to be an exciting hatchback and an enthusiast's choice. It is also worth mentioning that Volkswagen launched the 2-door Polo GTI in India with the more powerful 190bhp, 1.8-litre TSI Engine.

Thoughts About The Cars & SUVs Discontinued in India

Companies make products and improve them over a period of time to suit the requirements of customers. As such, cars also go under improvement in the form of 'facelift', but they can only be improved to a certain extent. However, some models do deserve to be continued for the sake of the existence of good engineering.
