Top 10 Best-Selling Car Brands In India (August 2022) - Y-o-Y Sales Up By Nearly 27%
Passenger vehicle sales in India rose by 26.93 per cent in August 2022 compared to the same period last year while Month-over-Month sales dropped by 3.81 per cent compared to July 2022.
Car sales in India rose by 26.93 per cent in August 2022 compared to the same period last year while Month-over-Month sales dropped by 3.81 per cent compared to July 2022.
Carmakers sold a total of 3,28,307 cars in India last month with Maruti Suzuki accounting for just over 40 per cent of the passenger vehicles sold in August. Hyundai and Tata Motors complete the podium while Mahindra took the 4th spot with a record-breaking month of sales while Kia rounded up the top 5.
Out of the 14 major carmakers only 3 - Honda, Renault and MG - were in the red in terms of Y-o-Y sales. Overall, Y-o-Y numbers rose by 69,654 units (26.93 per cent) compared to August 2021's 2,58,653 units.
Month-over-Month sales figures were down by 12,995 units (3.81 per cent) compared to July 2022's 3,41,302 units. Only 5 of the 14 carmakers - Mahindra, Kia, Honda, Jeep and Citroen - registered positive M-o-M growth in August.

Let's take a look at the 10 best-selling car brands from August 2022...
1 - Maruti Suzuki - 1,34,166 Units
India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 1,34,166 passenger vehicles last month. Y-o-Y sales rose by 30,979 units (30.02 per cent) compared to 1,03,187 units sold in August 2021. However, M-o-M sales for Maruti dipped by 8,684 (6.08 per cent) compared to July 2022.
2 - Hyundai - 49,510 Units
South Korean carmaker Hyundai sold a total of 49,510 cars and SUVs in India last month. Hyundai's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 2,644 units (5.64 per cent) compared to August 2021's 46,866 units. M-o-M number dropped by 990 units (1.96 per cent) compared to July's 50,500 units.
3 - Tata Motors- 47,166 Units
Tata Motors continued its strong run of sales selling a total of 47,166 units. Tata's Y-o-Y sales numbers were up by 68.34 per cent (19,148 units) compared to August 2021's 28,018 units. Tata's M-o-M numbers were in the red, dropping slightly by 339 units or 0.71 per cent compared to July's 47,505 units.
4 - Mahindra - 29,852 Units
Mahindra strengthened its hold on the 4th spot in the Indian car market in August 2022 selling 29,852 passenger vehicles. Mahindra's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 86.89 per cent (13,879 units) compared to August 2021's 15,973 units. Mahindra's M-o-M numbers were also in the black, rising by 6.41 per cent or 1,799 units compared to July 2022's 28,053 units.
Mahindra which launched the Scorpio Classic last month is strengthening its portfolio of ICE vehicles and readying an arsenal of EVs that will hit the market in the coming year starting this month with the XUV400 EV.
5 - Kia - 23,332 Units
South Korean carmaker Kia sold a total of 23,332 vehicles in India last month. Y-o-Y sales of the Hyundai Group's premium brand in India rose by 33.27 per cent (5,572 units) compared to August 2021's 16,750 units. Kia's M-o-M sales were also in the black, rising by 300 units or 1.36 per cent compared to July 2022's 22,022 units.

Toyota claimed the 6th spot selling a total of 14,959 units last month. While Toyota's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 2,187 units (17.12 per cent) compared to August 2021's 12,772 units, M-o-M numbers dipped by 24.04 per cent (4,734 units) compared to July 2022's 19,693 units.
Honda laid claim to the 7th spot selling 7,769 units in August 2022. Honda's Y-o-Y sales numbers were in the red for August 2022 dropping by 30.49 per cent (3,408 units) compared to the same period last year when it sold 11,177 units. M-o-M numbers though were in the black, rising by 14.52 per cent (985 units) compared to July 2022's 6,784 units.
Sliding into the 8th spot was French carmaker Renault which sold 7,012 passenger vehicles last month. Renault's Y-o-Y sales numbers were down by 27.73 per cent (2,691 units) compared to August 2021 when it sold 9,703 units. Renault's M-o-M sales numbers were also in the red, dropping by 1.63 per cent or 116 units compared to July 2021's 7,128 units.
Skoda claimed the 9th spot in this list, selling 4,222 units last month. Skoda's Y-o-Y numbers were up by 10.26 per cent (393 units) compared to August 2021's 3,829 units. However, the Czech carmaker's M-o-M numbers are down by 5.06 per cent (225 units) compared to July 2022's 4,447 units.
MG claimed the final spot on this list selling 3,823 units last month. MG's sales numbers were in the red in terms of both Y-o-Y and M-o-M growth with the former dropping by 11.40 per cent (492 units) compared to the 4,315 units sold in August 2021. MG's M-o-M sales numbers dropped by 4.73 per cent (190 units) compared to the 4,013 units sold in August 2021.
Thoughts About August's Sales Numbers
The Indian car market continued to show positive signs in August despite a slight drop in sales compared to July. With the festive season around the corner, carmakers are expected to launch an array of new and special edition cars and SUV which should result in some good sales numbers in the coming months.
