Top 10 Best Selling Car Brands In India (April 2022) - Skoda Soars As Tata Closes In On Hyundai

In terms of Year-over-Year (Y-o-Y) sales, the Indian car market just barely made it into the black.

Carmakers sold a total of 2,93,435 units in the month of April 2022, which was 6,736 units more than what was achieved in April 2021. In the fourth month of 2021, car manufacturers shipped out 2,86,699 units.

Out of the top 10 carmakers, six were in the black though the top 2 players (Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai) in the market were both down over 10 per cent.

In terms of M-o-M sales, every carmaker except for Honda found themselves in the red with the entire Indian car market contracting by 8.83 per cent (28,412 units) from March 2022's sales numbers of 3,21,847 units.

Let's take a look at the top 10 Indian carmakers in terms of sales numbers from April 2022.

1) Maruti Suzuki - 1,21,995 Units

April was a difficult month for Maruti Suzuki despite launching the new Ertiga and the revised XL6 MPVs in the country. In terms of Y-o-Y sales, Maruti dipped by 10.22 per cent (13,884 units) compared to April 2021, when it had sold 1,35,879 units. M-o-M sales also dropped 8.86 per cent (11,866 units) compared to March 2022, when the carmaker sold 1,33,861 units.

2) Hyundai - 44,001 Units

South Korean carmaker Hyundai barely held onto second place in April 2022 as it too found sales going in the wrong direction. Hyundai's Y-o-Y sales dipped by 10.21 per cent (5,001 units) compared to April 2021 when the Korean car giant had sold 49,002 units in India. Hyundai's M-o-M sales were nearly flat contracting by just 1.34 per cent (599 units) compared to March 2022's sales of 44,600 units.

3) Tata Motors - 41,587 Units

Tata Motors had a stellar April 2022 with the carmaker unveiling two EV concepts in the form of the Gen 2 Curvv and the Gen 3 Avinya. Y-o-Y sales for the Mumbai-based carmaker swelled by 65.72 per cent (16,492 units) compared to April 2021 when Tata had sold only 25,095 units. However, M-o-M sales dropped slightly by 1.67 per cent (706 units) compared to March 2022's figures of 42,293 units. In terms of market share Tata is now less than a percentage point behind Hyundai and now controls just over 14 per cent of the Indian car market.

4) Mahindra - 22,526 Units

Mahindra also enjoyed a stellar April 2022 compared to the same period last year registering a Y-o-Y growth of 23.19 per cent (4,241 units). Mahindra sold 18,285 units in April 2021. M-o-M sales though were down 18.39 per cent (5,077 units) compared to March 2022 when Mahindra sold 27,603 units.

5) Kia - 19,019 Units

Kia enjoyed another stellar month of sales as it inched it way up to controlling nearly 6.5 per cent of the Indian car market. Y-o-Y sales for Kia were up by 18.05 per cent (2,908 units) compared to April 2021 when it sold 16,111 units.

M-o-M sales though were down 15.93 per cent (3,603 units) from March 2022's record breaking numbers when it sold 22,622 units.

The Other 5

Japanese carmakers Toyota and Honda occupied fifth and sixth positions selling 15,085 and 7,874 units respectively in the month of April 2022.

In terms of Y-o-Y sales Toyota grew by 57.14 per cent ((5,485 units) compared to April 2021's sales figures of 9,600 units. Honda though dipped into the Red in terms of Y-o-Y sales as it contracted by 13.21 per cent (1,198 units) compared to April 2021's 9,072 units.

M-o-M sales compared to March 2022 saw the fortunes reversed for the two Japanese giants. Toyota shrunk by 11.94 per cent (2, 046 units) from 17,131 units in March while Honda grew by 19.5 per cent (1,285 units) from last month's figures of 6,589 units sold.

Renault suffered a double dip in April, shrinking in both Y-o-Y and M-o-M sales metrics as it sold 7,594 units. Y-o-Y sales for the French carmaker dipped by 12.13 per cent (1,048 units) compared to April 2021's 8,642 units. M-o-M sales contracted by 10.85 per cent (924 units) from March 2022's 8,518 units.

The VW Group's mass market Skoda and Volkswagen rounded off the top 10 selling 5,152 and 3,547 units respectively in April 2022.

Both marques grew exponentially in terms of Y-o-Y sales. Skoda was the biggest gainer across the board with sales rising by 436.11 per cent (4,191 units) from April 2021's 961 units. Volkswagen's Y-o-Y sales also grew significantly by 131.38 per cent (2,014 units) from April 2021's figures of 1,533 units.

However, sales for both brands dropped in M-o-M comparisons with Skoda dropping by 8.13 per cent (456 units) and VW slipping by 3.4 per cent (140 units) compared to March 2022.

Thoughts On The Indian Car Market's Performance In April 2022

The Indian car market was rather stagnant in April 2022 despite many carmakers dropping into the red in Year-over-Year comparisons. This shows that the Indian car market seems to be recovering from last year's lows caused by the pandemic and the chip shortage. The drop in Month-over-Month sales can be attributed to the start of a new financial year which brings with it a host of price hikes.
