Car sales in India rose by a massive 185.71 per cent in May 2022 compared to the same period last year while Month-over-Month sales rose ever so slightly by just 0.31 per cent compared to April 2022. In the 5th month of the year, carmakers sold a total of 2,94,342 cars in India. In this article, we'll take a detailed look at the 10 best-selling car brands for May 2022.

Top 10 Best Selling Car Brands In India (May 2022) - Tata Pips Hyundai To Second Spot

In terms of Year-over-Year (Y-o-Y) sales, the Indian car market blasted its way into the black with carmakers selling 1,91,320 units (185.71 per cent) more than what was achieved in May 2021. In May 2021, car manufacturers sold only 1,03,022 units as the pandemic and the chip shortage ravaged the industry. Every carmaker except for French carmaker Citroen showed an increase in sales.

In terms of M-o-M metrics, the Indian car market grew by just by 0.31 per cent (907 units) from April 2022's sales numbers of 2,93,435 units. Carmakers were split down the middle with 7 in the black and the other 7 in the red.

Let's now take a look at the top 10 Indian carmakers in terms of sales numbers from the month of May 2022.

1) Maruti Suzuki - 1,24,474 Units

In terms of Y-o-Y sales, the month of May 2022 was a blockbuster for Maruti as sales rose by an astonishing 278.31 per cent (91,571 units) compared to May 2021, when it had sold 32,903 units. M-o-M sales were also in the black rising by 2.03 per cent (2,479 units) compared to April 2022, when the carmaker sold 1,21,995 units.

2) Tata Motors - 43,341 Units

Tata Motors enjoyed a record-breaking period in May 2022 with the carmaker recording its best-ever sales numbers, which in turn allowed it to pip Hyundai tp the second spot on the sales charts.

Y-o-Y sales for Tata Motors rose by 185.50 per cent (28,160 units) compared to May 2021 when Tata had sold only 15,181 units. M-o-M sales numbers were also up by 4.22 per cent (1,754 units) compared to April 2022's figures of 41,587 units.

3) Hyundai - 42,293 Units

South Korean carmaker Hyundai lost its position as the second largest carmaker in India in terms of sales in the month of May 2022 despite a 69.17 per cent (17,292 units )increase in Y-o-Y sales compared to May 2021 when the Korean car giant had sold 25,001 units in India. Hyundai's M-o-M sales contracted by 3.88 per cent (1,708 units) compared to April 2022's sales of 44,001 units.

4) Mahindra - 26,904 Units

Mumbai-based carmaker Mahindra also enjoyed a stellar 31 days of sales in May 2022. Mahindra Y-o-Y sales numbers grew by a massive 236.13 per cent (18,900 units) compared to May 2021 when it sold just 8,004 cars and SUVs. M-o-M sales were also up, rising by 19.44 per cent (4,378 units) compared to April 2022 when Mahindra sold 22,526 units.

5) Kia - 18,718 Units

Kia enjoyed another good month of sales with Y-o-Y sales for the South Korean carmaker rising 69.39 per cent (7,668 units) compared to May 2021 when it sold 11,051 units. M-o-M sales though were slightly down by just 1.58 per cent (301 units) from April 2022's when it sold 19,019 units.

Japanese carmaker Toyota recorded the highest Y-o-Y growth in terms of percentage points with sales rising to 10,216 units in May 2022. This was a whopping 1,344.98 per cent (9,509 units) more than May 2021's sales numbers of just 707 units. However, M-o-M sales numbers were down by 32.28 per cent (4,869 units) compared to the previous month's 15,085 units sold.

Honda continued its hold on seventh place selling 8,188 in the month of May 2022. In terms of Y-o-Y sales Honda grew by 302.95 per cent (6,156 units) compared to May 2021's sales numbers of just 2,032 units. Honda's M-o-M sales numbers compared to April 2022 grew by 3.99 per cent (314 units) with the Japanese marque selling 7,874 cars and SUVs in the fourth month of 2022.

Renault sold a total of 5,010 units in May 2022, which saw the French carmaker's Y-o-Y sales numbers rise by 91.22 per cent (2,390 units) compared to the May 2021 when it sold only 2,620 units. M-o-M sales metrics contracted by 34.03 per cent (2,584 units) compared to April 2022's 7,594 units.

Skoda occupied 9th spot in the sales charts for May 2022 with the Czech carmaker selling 4,604 units over the 31-day period. Skoda's Y-o-Y numbers rose by an astonishing 543.02 per cent (3,888 units) compared to May 2021 when it sold only 716 units. M-o-M metrics were down by 10.64 per cent 548 units compared to April's 5,152 units.

The final spot on the top 10 list was captured by Chinese-owned British carmaker MG Motor. MG sold a total of 4,008 units in May 2022, which was 294.49 per cent (2,992 units) gain over the same period last year when it sold only 1,016 units.

Month-over-Month sales numbers were also in the black for MG with the carmaker's sales numbers rising by 99.60 per cent (2,000 units) which was the highest in terms of percentage numbers across the entire Indian car market. In April 2022, MG sold a total of 2,008 units.

Thoughts On The May 2022 Sales Numbers For Four Wheelers

The Indian car market continues to show signs of improvement with Y-o-Y sales rising by a huge 185.71 per cent. While the Month-over-Month growth wasn't that great, it is hopefully a sign of good things to come.
