Design

Though design is a subjective matter, it must be said that the 5th generation Honda City and the Volkswagen Virtus look the most elegant, whereas the Hyundai Verna looks a bit sportier thanks to its coupe-like silhouette.

On the other hand, the Skoda Slavia and Maruti Suzuki Ciaz looks decent and both sedans come with a good dose of chrome elements to keep Indian consumers happy.

Features

In terms of features, the Volkswagen Virtus and the Skoda Slavia being the newer vehicles have a slight advantage and offer features such as fully digital instrument cluster, Active Cylinder Technology and a few more.

Dimensions

Thanks to the versatile MQB A0-IN platform, Skoda Slavia became one of the most spacious sedans in its segment with exterior dimensions measuring 4,541mm X 1,752mm X 1,487mm. Moreover, the Skoda Slavia comes with a best-in-class wheelbase and boot space of 2,651mm and 521-litres, respectively.

Though the new Volkswagen Virtus is also built on the same MQB A0-IN platform as the Skoda Slavia, the German sedan is even bigger by measuring 4,561mm long, 1,752mm wide, and 1,507mm tall. However, the wheelbase and boot space are identical to the Skoda Slavia at 2,651mm and 521-litres, respectively.

Honda City is the second longest and tallest sedan in this comparison at 4,549mm long and 1,489mm tall. Moreover, it is the third widest sedan only behind the Skoda Slavia and the Volkswagen Virtus at 1,748mm. However, it has one of the shortest wheelbase in its segment at 2,600mm and comes with a third-best boot space of 506-litres.

Though the Maruti Ciaz looks the longest, it is actually the second most compact sedan here by measuring at 4,490mm and it is also a few millimetres wider and taller than the slimmest and shortest dean here at 1730mm and 1485mm, respectively. However, the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz has the second-longest wheelbase and second-biggest boot space at 2,650mm and 510-litres.

The Verna is undoubtedly the smallest sedan here and it measures 4,400mm long, 1,729mm wide, 1,475mm tall, and sports a wheelbase of 2,600mm which is identical to that of Honda City. Moreover, the compact dimensions affect the boot space, which is the smallest in this comparison by measuring at 465-litres.

Powertrain

The Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus come with two identical engine options. The first engine option is the 113bhp, 1.0-litre TSI engine with 178Nm of torque. The second engine option is a more potent 150bhp, 1.5-litre TSI petrol engine with 250Nm of torque and Active Cylinder Technology that deactivates two of the four cylinders for more fuel efficiency.

Both the Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus come with a 6-speed manual transmission as standard. However, the more powerful 1.5-litre TSI engine comes mated to a 7-speed DSG transmission, whereas the 1.0-litre TSI version gets a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

The Honda City is also powered by two engine options, however, one of the engines is a diesel unit.

The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is still a very lucrative option for anyone looking for a decent chauffeur driven car. The Hyundai Verna offers the most flexible powertrain options and the sedan is also very well equipped, but the lack of size is evident as its competitors have grown a size larger.
