Renault Kiger & Volkswagen Taigun Shortlisted For 2022 World Car Of The Year Awards

Both the Renault Kiger and the Volkswagen Taigun are part of a five vehicle lineup competing for the title of the Urban Car of The Year. The other vehicles in line for the title of the urban Car of the Year 2022 include the Opel Mokka sub-compact SUV, Dacia Sandero hatchback, and the Toyota Yaris Cross compact SUV.

Both the Kiger and the Taigun are manufactured in India. The Renault Kiger is currently exported to Indonesia, South Africa and other countries in the SAARC region. The Taigun on the other hand is set to be exported to Mexico in the near future.

The final nominees for the 2022 Edition of the World Car of the Year were determined by a jury of 102 automotive journalists from across the world. This year the jury members also had to decide about the finalists in a brand new category - The World Electric Vehicle of the Year. The finalists for the 2022 World Electric Vehicle of the Year include the Audi e-tron GT, BMW iX, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Mercedes-Benz EQS.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS electric sedan also finds itself in contention for the title of World Luxury Car of the Year 2022. The German electric sedan will go up against the likes of the Audi Q5 Sportback, BMW iX, Genesis GV70 and the Volvo C40 Recharge. The EQS is expected to make its way to India in the near future while Volvo is expected to launch the XC40 Recharge, the crossover version of its nominated vehicle in India later this year.

The category of World Performance Car of the Year is dominated by the Volkswagen Group. The German automotive giant is responsible for three of the five finalists in this category thanks to the Porsche 911 GT3, Audi RS e-tron GT and the Golf (in both GTI and R guises). The other two finalists are the Subaru BRZ/ Toyota GR86 and the BMW M3/M4 (in both regular and Competition guises).

The shortlist for the World Car Design of the Year unlike the other categories was decided by a panel of experts featuring the likes of design maestro and former JLR design head Ian Callum, the crossover king and former Nissan design boss Shiro Nakamura, and former Renault chief designer Patrick Le Quément. What makes this year's design award finalists stand out from previous nominees is the fact that the entire lineup is fully electric. The final five nominees include the Audi e-tron GT, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6 and Mercedes-Benz EQS.

Finally, the final nominees for the title of World Car of The Year 2022 include the Audi Q4 e-tron, Cupra Formentor, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Genesis G70, Honda Civic (11th Gen), Hyundai Ioniq 5, Hyundai Tucson, Kia EV6, Lexus NX and the Subaru BRZ/ Toyota GR 86.

The Volkswagen Taigun and Renault Kiger making the finalists for the World Urban Car of the Year is a big achievement for both companies who specifically targetted the Indian market with the two vehicles. If one of these two does end up winning the category, we'll gladly raise a toast to them.
