Next-Gen Range Rover Sport SVR To Feature BMW V8
British carmaker Land Rover is set to plop in a 616bhp version of BMW's 4.4-litre V8 engine in its next Range Rover Sport SVR claims a report by Autocar UK.
According to the report, the next generation of the Range Rover Sport, which has outsold its larger Range Rover sibling is set to arrive in 2023 with a host of petrol and electrified options. These engine options include the aforementioned V8 from the Bavarians which was first seen under the bonnet of the full-sized Range Rover
Along with the new architecture, Land Rover is set to plop in BMW's 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet of the range-topping SVR model. The new Range Rover Sport SVR will feature BMW's S63B44T4 found under the bonnet of the X6 M Competition as part of the powertrain sharing agreement signed by the British and German carmakers.
Under the bonnet of the new Range Rover Sport SVR, the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged BMW V8 will send 616bhp to the wheels of the British SUV. The new powerplant will provide a significant power increase over Land Rover's current 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine. that kicks out 567bhp. Ford is winding down production of the AJ V8.
The switch to BMW power means that the new Range Rover Sport SVR will have 49bhp more to play with when it arrives in 2023 to replace the current model which has been around for nearly a decade. The new powerplant claims the report will help bring the 0-100km/h sprint time of the Range Rover Sport SVR closer to the 4-second mark and a top speed of 180mph (289.6 km/h).
The next-generation Range Rover Sport is also set to offer a host of mild-hybrid petrol and diesel engines that can also be found under the bonnet of the new Range Rover. Also set to arrive along with the mild-hybrid setups is a plug-in hybrid version of the British SUV. This version of the Range Rover Sport, claims Autocar UK, will utilise a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine along with a 141bhp electric motor that comes paired to a 31.8kWh battery pack that will provide 100 kilometres of electric-only range. Additionally, a V8 hybrid setup similar to the one found on the BMW Concept XM could make its way to the Range Rover Sport to create what could be the most powerful Land Rover model to date.
Land Rover has also confirmed that it will bring out an EV version of all of its models by the end of the decade starting with the regular Range Rover in 2024. Whether the new Range Rover Sport EV will be propelled by a BMW derived electric powertrain is still to be confirmed. However, with BMW and Land Rover partnering up for the shared development of new EV powertrains, we shouldn't say no to that possibility just yet.
Thoughts On The Range Rover Sport's New German Heart
The current Range Rover Sport SVR is a proper little monster with its supercharged V8. However, the next-gen model is set to be even more powerful and will feature a new BMW sourced V8 with twin-turbochargers. So more power? Yes. However, the soundtrack will be slightly different thanks to the turbos and the higher-revving BMW V8.
