Porsche Taycan Sets New World Record: Covers 4,560Kms With A Charging Time Of Just 2.5 Hours
A new world record has been set for the fastest charging time taken by an electric car to do a cross-country run across America. A Porsche Taycan driven by Wayne Gerdes covered the distance of 2,834.5 miles (4,560 kilometres) between Los Angeles and New York with a charging time of just 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 48 seconds.

The United States of America is a vast country. Los Angeles which is on the Western seaboard of the nation is more than 4,500 kilometres away from New York which is on the Eastern seaboard of the USA. Many have made attempts to earn various world records for a cross-country run between the two cities.

The most popular record that exists is, the fastest time taken by a car to clock the enormous distance. While people still try to break that record, with the arrival of electric cars, there has emerged a new type of world record - Shortest Charging Time To Cross The United States In An Electric Vehicle.

This world record is by nature very competitive and will continue to be broken time and again. There are multiple facets to be considered here. How quick can the car actually charge? Are there enough fast-chargers en route? And finally, how much distance will the car cover on one charge?

Oh wait, there's more to it. Some vehicles charge faster from 10-80 percent. So, is it worth spending the extra time to charge it to the maximum and get more range out of it? Or does one charge it till 80 percent and set off? We're sure these were the questions running through Wayne Gerdes' mind while planning this world record attempt.

The resultant world record shows that everything was planned with great precision. The electric car chosen for the feat was a Porsche Taycan, one of the most advanced and quickest electric cars in the world. However, this feat is more about how quickly the battery cold charge up than how fast the car is.

The 2021 Taycan used for the record was the standard model with the Performance Battery Plus pack as well as the Premium pack. In other words, this Porsche Taycan can do up to 484 kilometres on a single charge.

At an 800-Volt charging station, the Porsche Taycan can be charged from 5 to 80 percent in just 22.5 minutes. This is what sets the Taycan apart from the rest and this is how Wayne Gerdes took the world record.

The previous world record, which was the benchmark time for the Porsche was 7 hours, 10 minutes, and 1 second. Safe to say, the Porsche wiped that record off the records with a charging time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 48 seconds.

As a part of the requirements to clinch the record, every charging stop made by the Porsche was documented with the help of independent witnesses. Also, every mile driven by the Porsche was recorded on video.

The Electrify America app was used to plot the route in a way that the fast chargers would be put to maximum use. Wayne Gerdes was quoted as saying, "I'm proud and honestly a little surprised to have set the new benchmark by such a margin. The Taycan performed even better than expected. The first time I charged on a 350KW charger, 6 to 82 percent occurred in just 22 minutes." Now that is some pretty quick charging.

Thoughts On Porsche Taycan Taking The World Record For Shortest Charging Time On A Cross-Country Trip
Charging times for electric vehicles are dropping rapidly it is easy to see where it is going in the future. This is why we will see more attempts being made to break this record and with time, several new benchmarks will be set.
