Mercedes Vision EQXX Extends Range Record - Drives 1,202km On A Single Charge
German luxury carmaker Mercedes' Vision EQXX has extended its own record for longest journey on a single charge after it covered 1,202 kilometres on a journey from Stuttgart to Silverstone last week.
German luxury carmaker Mercedes' Vision EQXX concept has extended its own record for longest journey on a single charge. The Mercedes Vision EQXX concept covered 1,202 kilometres on a journey from Stuttgart to Silverstone last week as it made its way to attend the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The Mercedes Vision EQXX already held the record for the longest journey on a single charge when it covered 1,008 kilometres from Stuttgart to Cassis on the French Mediterranean coast in April. At the end of that run, Mercedes stated that the EQXX still had 140 kilometres of range left.
The latest journey saw the Mercedes EQXX blast across the German Autobahn before it glided across the border into France near Strasbourg. Then the concept electric car cruised the French motorways to Calais where it boarded the Eurotunnel to Calais.
After hitting the English coast, the EQXX cruised the M25 to around London before stopping at the Mercedes Grand Prix headquarters in Brackley before heading to Silverstone.
At the racetrack, driving duties were taken over by Mercedes Formula E driver Nyck de Vries, who pushed the concept car for 11 trips across Silverstone, hitting a top speed of 140km/h before bringing it back in and using the last of the charge to travel through the pits. After a full charge, the EQXX made its way to the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Mercedes claims that the Vision EQXX achieved an average consumption of 8.3kWh/100 kilometres despite going through heavy traffic in temperatures of up to 30 degrees celsius. And while other battery powered EVs struggle at higher temperatures, the Vision EQXX's unique thermal management system helped keep the concept car's powertrain cool.
Commenting on the Mercedes Vision EQXX's new record, Markus Schäfer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer responsible for Development and Procurement said, "The journey continues - even further, even more efficient! Yet again, the Vision EQXX has proven that it can easily cover more than 1,000 km on a single battery charge, this time faced with a whole different set of real-world conditions. As Mercedes-Benz strives to go all-electric by 2030 wherever market conditions allow, it is important to show to the world what can be achieved in real terms through a combination of cutting-edge technology, teamwork and determination."
The entire 1,202 kilometre journey was covered over a period of 2 days (21st and 22nd June) with a total driving time of 14 and a half hours. The Mercedes Vision EQXX averaged 83km/h on a single charge and hit a top speed of 140km/h at Silverstone.
The Mercedes Vision EQXX features a battery pack rated at over 100kWh and its electric motor produces 241bhp. Helping the concept car cut through the air is its absolutely aerodynamic body which gives it a coefficient of drag of just 0.17.
Thoughts On The Mercedes Vision EQXX New Range Record
The Mercedes Vision EQXX extending its own range is something we expected after it ended the previous record run with around 150kms of range still left. Hopefully, we'll soon see all that has been learnt from this concept in Merc's production cars soon.
