Maruti Suzuki & Toyota Electric SUV Set For 2025 Debut — 500km Range

Maruti Suzuki & Toyota's first EV for India will be a mid-size SUV with up to 500 kilometres of range claims a new report. The electric Maruti Suzuki/Toyota SUV will arrive in 2025.

The new SUV will feature distinct styling for both brands to differentiate them from each other when they hit the streets in 2025. The Maruti Suzuki version codenamed 'YY8' will feature a futuristic design that the report claims will be radically different from the current bland design language of the brand's present-day fleet. Toyota's version of the SUV will feature a design that is expected to follow in the footsteps of the BZ4X EV.

Maruti Suzuki & Toyota Electric SUV Set For 2025 Debut

The electric Maruti Suzuki/Toyota SUV will be manufactured at Suzuki's facility in Gujarat. The new EV will be sold in both India and will be exported to international markets as well.

The new electric SUV will be based on a skateboard platform and will be quite large, competing with the likes of the current day Hyundai Creta in terms of size.

The report claims that the new electric YY8 SUV will be 4,275mm long, 1,880mm wide and 1,640mm long. The YY8's wheelbase will be quite large at 2,700mm. The new SUV will weigh in at 1,728 kilogrammes in its all-wheel drive guise. The changes in the design for the Toyota variant mean that the Japanese brand's EV could vary slightly in terms of size, though the wheelbase is expected to remain unchanged.

The new electric SUV's architecture will be based on the 27PL platform. The 27PL is based on Toyota's global 40PL platform and is meant for small electric vehicles. Considering the space advantages presented by a fully electric architecture, the interiors of both the Maruti & Toyota versions are expected to be quite revolutionary compared to the ones offered in their current lineups.

Speaking about guises, the YY8 will be offered in both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive guises. The regular two-wheel drive version of the electric SUV will draw power from a single electric motor paired to a 48kWh battery pack. The electric motor is rated at 137bhp and when combined with the battery pack will give the upcoming SUV a range of 400 kilometres under standard testing conditions.

A dual-motor, all-wheel drive version of the YY8 electric SUV will up the power to 170bhp. The dual-motor Maruti Suzuki YY8 will draw power from a larger 59kWh. The larger battery pack will extend the range of the electric SUV to 500 kilometres in the real world claims the report.

The battery pack for the new electric SUV will be locally sourced from TDSG's battery manufacturing facility in Gujarat. TDSG is a joint venture by Suzuki, Denso and Toshiba which manufactures lithium-ion battery packs in India. The lithium-ion cells for the battery pack will be sourced from the Chinese EV manufacturer BYD.

The report claims that the upcoming electric SUV from Maruti Suzuki will be priced aggressively. Maruti Suzuki is said to be targetting a Rs 13-15 lakh pricepoint for the new SUV. This aggressive pricing will undercut even the Tata Nexon, which is currently India's best selling electric car.

Thoughts On Maruti Suzuki/Toyota's Upcoming Electric SUV

The upcoming electric SUV from the Maruti Suzuki/ Toyota partnership in India promises to be a gamechanger. If the two companies do stick to the targeted price point then the landscape of the EV car market could be in for a radical shakeup.
