Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ignis, S-Presso Receive 1-Star Safety Rating At Global NCAP
Recently, Indian-made vehicles such as the Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and Mahindra bagged a 5-Star safety rating by Global NCAP.
In stark contrast, Maruti Suzuki Swift, Ignis and S-Presso hatchbacks have been awarded a 1-star safety rating each by the same crash test organisation. This is particularly alarming considering these cars are some of the best-selling cars in the country.

Diving into the details, the Maruti Suzuki S-Presso scored 20.03 points in the Adult Occupant Protection crash test and 3.52 points in the Child Occupant Protection crash test. In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki Swift fared even worse in the Adult Occupant Protection crash test with a score of 19.19 points, whereas the Child Occupant Protection crash test came out a lot better at 16.68 points.
However, the poorest of the lot was the Maruti Suzuki Ignis with a score of 16.48 points for the Adult Occupant Protection crash test and 3.86 points for the Child Occupant Protection crash test. It is also worth mentioning that all cars came with a test result showing a 'Weak' / 'Poor' rating for driver chest protection.
It is to be noted that, the score for the Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback has gone down from a 2-Star safety rating to a 1-Star safety rating with the introduction of the new more stringent crash test protocols. Moreover, the new scores cannot be directly compared with the old scores as well.
This is because the new crash test protocols take in a lot more factors into account while conducting the crash test. In fact, the new crash test protocols consider the new pedestrian protection norms, standard fitment of electronic stability control (ESC), side impact test, and much more. Moreover, the chest load readings are now taken in a much more stringent manner.
Thoughts About Maruti Suzuki Cars Scoring 1-Star Safety Rating
Since the general public in India are a lot more aware of the importance of crash test ratings, the 1-Star safety ratings from Global NCAP are likely to hurt the sales of the Indo-Japanese automaker more than ever. While the popularity of the Swift may help the model, we expect the sales figures of S-Presso and Ignis to take a considerable hit in the future.
