Mahindra Thar To Get More Affordable – Loses This Feature
The second-generation Mahindra Thar SUV has been a runaway success for Mahindra in India. Now, the SUV is about to get a lot more affordable.
However, to make a vehicle more affordable, some features have to be sacrificed and Mahindra is sacrificing the four-wheel drive system in the Thar SUV to make the SUV a lot more affordable.

While the idea to remove the off-road prowess from an off-road SUV may seem awkward and dumb at a glance, a large chunk of Mahindra Thar owners buys the SUV for its looks. That being said, the Mahindra Thar is one of the best SUVs to modify and the extent of these modifications are known to be limited by budget and one's imagination.
It is also worth mentioning that the rear-wheel drive version of the Toyota Fortuner SUV has high demand in the Indian market due to its lower entry-level price. That being said, Toyota had figured out that most of its customers have never taken their SUV off-road, which is a shame considering the SUV's abilities.
That being said, we expect Mahindra to boost the sales of the Thar SUV in a similar manner by introducing the rear-wheel drive (2WD) variant of the Thar SUV in India. In fact, a few images of the rear-wheel drive Mahindra Thar SUV test mule has been doing rounds in the internet and various social media platforms.
It is also worth mentioning that the Mahindra Thar SUV was updated recently ahead of the year-end. However, this update has compromised the off-road ability of the Thar SUV and the company is no longer offering a locking differential as a standard option in the SUV. In fact, only the top-spec 'LX' trim level of the SUV can be specified to sport one.
Thoughts About Mahindra Thar Rear Wheel Drive (2WD)
Though the upcoming update to the Mahindra Thar SUV could be a turn-off for many off-road enthusiasts, many of Thar's customers are lifestyle buyers and may not require a locking differential or a four-wheel drive system for their city runabouts and highway cruising. That being said, we expect good sales figures from the rear-wheel drive variant of the Thar SUV if Mahindra opts to launch this 2WD variant of the SUV.
