Mahindra Thar 4X2 Gets 1.5L Engine From Marazzo – Driving Impressions Already Out
A few days back, images of Mahindra Thar 4X2 started surfacing on the internet ahead of its launch in India.
That being said, someone from the YouTube community has now uploaded the first driving impressions of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4X2 SUV. On top of that, the YouTuber reveals many details about the upcoming SUV.

Exterior
Looking at the exterior of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4X2, the SUV remains almost identical to its 4X4 iteration. In fact, the upcoming 4X2 iteration of the Mahindra Thar SUV uses the same tyres and alloy wheels as its 4X4 counterpart. However, the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4X2 does not seem to sport the "4X4" badging.
Interior
Like the exterior, the interior of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4X2 SUV continues to be identical to the Mahindra Thar 4X4 SUV. However, thanks to the absence of a 4WD system, the model does not sport the 4WD gear selector lever that is seen on the standard Thar 4X4.
Powertrain
As per the video, the upcoming 4X2 version of the Mahindra Thar SUV ditches the larger 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged, diesel engine in favour of a smaller and lighter 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder, turbocharged, diesel engine. This new engine is expected to be similar to the one in the Mahindra Marazzo.
If so, this engine will match the peak torque output of the larger engine by pushing out 300Nm of peak torque. Moreover, the peak power output of the smaller 1.5-litre engine will stand at 121bhp. Apart from that, the 1.5-litre engine is mounted longitudinally and sends power to the rear wheels via a 6-speed gearbox.
Launch & Price
Though the video does not mention anything about the price or the launch of the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4X2, we expect Mahindra to soon launch the SUV in India at around Rs 10 lakh. Moreover, the Mahindra Thar 4X2 that is being driven in the video seems to be a test-drive unit given to the dealerships.
Thoughts About The Upcoming Mahindra Thar 4X2
Though the upcoming Mahindra Thar 4X2 SUV could be a turn-off for many off-road enthusiasts, many of Thar's customers are lifestyle buyers and may not require a locking differential or a four-wheel drive system. As such, we expect the Thar 4X2 to do exceptionally well in the Indian automobile market.
