British SUV manufacturer Land Rover has revealed the 2022 Range Rover Sport. The 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport features a clean modernist design and the SUV will later hit the roads in full EV guise in two years time.
Speaking at the unveiling of the new Range Rover Sport, Nick Collins, Executive Director Vehicle Programmes Jaguar Land Rover said, "Land Rover's pioneering MLA-Flex architecture and the latest chassis systems come together to deliver the highest levels of dynamism we've ever seen on Range Rover Sport. Integrated Chassis Control governs the comprehensive suite of innovations, coordinating everything from the latest switchable-volume air suspension system to our Dynamic Response Pro electronic active roll control. The result is the most engaging and thrilling Range Rover Sport ever."
2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Specs & Dimensions
The new Range Rover Sport from Land Rover is offered with a host of powertrain options including 2 inline six-cylinder options (1 petrol and 1 diesel in two different power trims) with 48V mild hybrid systems and a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine sourced from German luxury carmaker BMW that will offer 523bhp along with 750Nm of peak torque and a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds.
Land Rover will also offer the new Range Rover Sport in full plug-in hybrid form from the start. This plug-in model uses a 3.0-litre straight-six Ingenium petrol engine and a single electric motor with 141bhp on tap for a combined output of 503bhp and CO2 emissions as low as 18g/km.
Land Rover has also confirmed that the Range Rover Sport will spawn a fully electric variant in 2024, though no details are yet available of this vehicle's powertrain. However, rumblings from the automotive world have suggested that the Range Rover Sport EV could borrow its powertrain from BMW's flagship iX M60 SUV which currently offers 611bhp.
All models will feature Land Rover's all-wheel drive system and the British SUV will also feature all-wheel steering as an option if owners choose the Stormer Pack. This pack also adds Dynamic Response Pro, Electronic Active Differential with Torque Vectoring by Braking and Configurable Programmes.
The new Range Rover Sport is based on Jaguar Land Rover's MLA architecture and the new SUV is 4,946mm long, 2,209mm wide (with the mirrors open) and 1,820mm tall. The 2022 Range Rover Sport has a 2,997mm long wheelbase while its front and rear tracks measure at 1,702mm and 1,704mm respectively.
The Range Rover Sport has a ground clearance of 216mm which can be raised to 281mm by selecting the off-roading mode in the SUV's Terrain Response system.
In offroading mode, the Range Rover Sport has an approach angle of 33 degrees and a departure angle of 30 degrees. The Ramp Angle that the Range Rover Sport SUV can handle is 26.9 degrees and it can wade through water as deep as 900mm. The 2022 Range Rover Sport has a turning circle (kerb-to-kerb) of 12.53 metres which can be reduced to just 10.95 metres by ticking the rear-wheel steering option.
2022 Range Rover Sport Design & Features
The 2022 Range Rover Sport features a minimalist and modern design first seen on the new full-sized Range Rover. The new Range Rover Sport features short overhangs and despite the 75mm longer wheelbase it doesn't seem to be much larger than its predecessor from the outside.
At the front, the new Range Rover Sport features sleek LED headlights which are the slimmest ever fitted to a Range Rover to date. The lights flank a slimline grille with the Land Rover badge to the left.
Dynamic models will feature different front and rear bumpers along with body-coloured side skirts. The alloy wheels can now be specified in sizes up to 23-inches though the standard size will be 20-inches. The door handles sit flush to the sides of the car.
The rear end of the SUV features sleek LED taillights that are flush with the rest of the bodywork. Also seen is Range Rover lettering on a visor like centre strip. The roof features twin shark fin antennas and slopes towards the rear. Also seen at the back is a spoiler element.
Step inside the cabin and the minimalist design of the the new Range Rover Sport continuous to shine through. The dashboard section of the SUV's cabin is dominated by the large 13.7-inch driver's display behind the steering wheel and the smaller 13.1-inch infotainment dispay in the centre.
The infotainment system features Land Rover's Pivi Pro tech with the Amazon Alexa digital asisstant and is connected to a Meridian Audio system that features speakers in the headrests of the seats and allows for noise cancelling. Also seen are actual physical controls for the cliamte control system and a panoramic sunroof.
Thoughts On The New Range Rover Sport
The new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport takes a big leap forward while sticking to the British carmaker's new modernist design philosphy. With a host of powertrain options and an EV version on the way, the new Range Rover Sport promises to be a real firecracker of an SUV when it starts to arrive in customer's driveways this September.
