American SUV manufacturer Jeep has revealed the CJ Surge concept at SEMA 2022. The Jeep CJ Surge is the work of the Stellantis Group's Mopar vehicle customisation division and features a bespoke electrical propulsion system.
The Jeep CJ Surge concept drops the original CJ Jeep's inline-six petrol engine and replaces it under the bonnet of the restomod with a scalable 400-volt electrical system. Jeep claims that the concept will allow Mopar to "gain a better understanding of potential battery-electric vehicle (BEV) parts kit applications, leading to a future propulsion-system offering for enthusiasts to build or convert classic and current cars and trucks into zero-emission vehicles."
The electric motor under the hood of the CJ Surge concept vehicle showcased at SEMA 2022 produces a peak output of 200kW or 268bhp. Jeep hasn't revealed the peak torque figure of the electric motor that is paired to a 2-speed automatic gearbox that sends power to all four wheels.
The electric motor is powered by a 50kWh battery pack with 24 modules that is mounted in the rear section of the CJ Surge concept. Charging times and range figures were not provided by Jeep for the CJ Surge concept.
The CJ Surge comes packed with the usual host of off-roading kit that is common with these concept cars from Jeep. These include the electromod's 18-inch Rhino Solid wheels that come shod with a set of 35-inch BF Goodrich off-road tyres.
Both the front and rear feature Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) Dana 44 Crate axles and the concept SUV also features a 2-inch lift kit that along with the bonkers tyres should help the CJ Surge concept easily crawl over rocks and boulders. Other off-roading kit include LED fog lights, underbody protection and a winch.
The Jeep CJ Surge sports a bright Copper Canyon paint scheme with a gloss black hood, grille, bumpers and wheelarches. The Jeep CJ Surge features a 2-inch cropped windshield, with the driver and passenger sitting on seats upholstered with Black Sodeso cloth with houndstooth fabric inserts and surf blue stitching.
The Mopar instrument panel gauges include a charge indicator that lets those inside know how much charge is remaining in the Surge's battery pack. Other features include a rotary gear shifter knob, a custom-built roll cage, a bikini top roof and Mopar all-weather mats.
Thoughts On The Jeep CJ Surge Concept By Mopar
The Jeep CJ Surge concept is a look into the future of restomodding which like the rest of the car industry will have to switch to battery electric power as the car world tries to go green in a hurry.
