Build Your Dreams, which is better known as BYD has been in India a whole lot longer than most people would know. The firm entered India back in 2007, starting off as a components manufacturer for mobile phones including the likes of Nokia at its facility near Chennai.

In 2013, the firm imported the K9 all-electric bus into India for evaluation and four years later after an extensive testing period, BYD officially entered the Indian electric bus market.

Late last year, BYD entered the B2B car market with e6 and it recently made the electric MPV available to private buyers as well.

On the sidelines of the Atto 3 Review drive, we sat down with Sanjay Gopalakrishnan, Senior Vice President, Electric Passenger Vehicle Business, BYD India and got his thoughts about BYD in India and the brand's expansion plans.

Gopalkrishnan, who joined BYD's India operations in January 2022 as Senior Vice President for its Electric Passenger Vehicles division expanded on the firm's future plans for India.

Gopalkrishnan stated that BYD India expects to sell 15,000 electric cars in India in 2023 with most of that number expected to be the new Atto 3.

BYD will start deliveries of the Atto 3 in January 2023 and the firm has already received over 1,500 bookings for the electric SUV.

Gopalkrishnan revealed that many e6 owners have placed orders for the new Atto 3 thanks to their experiences with the electric MPV. BYD has already sold over 600 e6s in India.

He also revealed that BYD was building its own fast charger network at its various touchpoints, service centres and dealerships and that it had paired up with other players to set up charging infrastructure in other locations as well.

Gopalkrishnan also expanded on BYD's expansion plans for the Indian market. He revealed that BYD would bring in new products in 2024 and would explore setting up full EV production facilities in the country depending on the demand.

Gopalkrishna stated that the company expects the passenger EV market to start expanding in the country with a golden period of growth expected to start in the second half of the decade.
