Hyundai Kona EV Recall – 853 Units Affected

Hyundai has stated that it will be recalling 853 units of the Kona EV in the US after the identification of coolant leak issues.

According to the South Korean car manufacturer, there could be an internal leak in the Electric Power Control Unit (EPCU) on select Kona EVs. Moreover, this problem could lead to loss of power and in some cases stall the EV.

Moreover, Hyundai is quick to mention that the company is unaware of any mishaps due to the malfunction. However, there have been more than a few cases of power loss have been notified to the South Korean car manufacturer. It is also worth mentioning that the problem in the affected models will be rectified free of charge through dealerships.

Diving into the details of the misfortune, the affected batch of Hyundai Kona EVs are from the 2021 model year and these models come equipped with an EPCU that may have insufficient sealing at the DC converter housing. Also, as per reportings, this problem has been caused by inadequate steam cleaning during the production of the component,

While Hyundai Motors has decided to move ahead with the recall, authorised dealers are said to be notified about this issue after February 14. That being said, the South Korean car manufacturer is expected to inform affected car owners regarding the issue and about the recall.

Since Hyundai also sells the Kona EV in India, it is yet to be known whether any Indian-spec Kona EV has been affected by a similar issue. Moreover, there have been no such reported incidents from India regarding the Hyundai Kona EV suddenly losing power or stopping.

The current India-spec version of the Hyundai Kona EV features a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) electric motor. This electric motor drives the front wheels and puts out a respectable 135bhp of peak power and 395 Nm of peak torque. Hyundai says that the Kona EV can charge from 0-80 per cent battery capacity in less than an hour using a 50 kW DC fast charger.

Thoughts About The Hyundai Kona EV

The Hyundai Kona EV is a decent electric SUV for anyone looking for an electric vehicle in India. Apart from that, we expect this particular issue associated with the US-spec Hyundai Kona EV is limited to a particular batch of vehicles and as a result, this issue is highly unlikely to affect the India-spec models.
