Hyundai Ioniq 5 Vs Kia EV6 – Same Platform, Different Objectives

On paper, the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover is pretty much identical to the Kia EV6 electric crossover vehicle.

However, things are not as simple. In fact, we expect a significant difference in the prices of both these electric vehicles. Apart from that, there are other glaring differences despite both vehicles using the same platform.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 Vs Kia EV6

Design

Starting with the design, both the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6 are attractive-looking electric vehicles. However, despite using the same platform, both electric vehicles could not look any more different. While the Kia EV6 looks curvy and muscular, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 looks sharp and chiselled with sharp lines and creases.

Features

In terms of features, both the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV and Kia EV6 are similarly equipped in terms of features as both electric vehicles from the respective South Korean car manufacturers can not only power home appliances and home gadgets, both EVs also sport ADAS for better safety.

Other than that, both the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric vehicles come equipped with other noticeable and important features such as panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, sophisticated infotainment units with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, electrically-adjustable front seats, digital driver's display and a lot more.

Dimensions

Starting with the Kia EV6, the fully-imported electric crossover measures 4,695mm long, 1,890mm wide, and 1,550mm tall. On top of that, the wheelbase of the Kia EV6 measures about 2,900mm long. In comparison, though the Hyundai Ioniq 5 sports an identical width as the EV6, it is 55mm taller and 60mm shorter. Moreover, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 also comes with a very generous 3,000mm wheelbase.

Powertrain

The Kia EV6 is available in two variants. The GT Line variant of the EV6 is powered by an electric motor with 226bhp of power and 350Nm of torque. On the other hand, the top-spec Kia EV6 GT Line AWD comes with two PMSM electric motors and produces a combined output of 321bhp of peak power and 605Nm of peak torque.

In terms of the battery pack, both variants of the Kia EV6 electric crossover come packed with a large 77.4kWh battery pack. Thanks to such a large battery pack, the claimed range for the Kia EV6 electric crossover goes up to 708 kilometres under the ARAI test cycle.

In comparison, we expect the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to be powered by a 215bhp electric motor with 350Nm of peak torque. On top of that, we expect the locally-assembled model to come equipped with the larger 72.6kWh battery pack that will enable the EV to cover a distance of 481km on a full charge.

Thoughts About Hyundai Ioniq 5 & Kia EV6

We expect the Hyundai Ioniq 5 to be very successful in India as the electric crossover not only packs a very long list of features but it comes packed with a solid powertrain and large battery pack to suffice most requirements. However, the Kia EV6 is more likely to be the more desirable choice given its more performance-oriented powertrain setup.
