Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept Revealed
South Korean luxury carmaker Genesis has revealed the X Speedium Coupe Concept at the 2022 New York Auto Show.
South Korean luxury carmaker Genesis has revealed the X Speedium Coupe Concept at the 2022 New York Auto Show. The Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept is an evolution of last year's X concept.
Genesis claims that the new X Speedium Coupe Concept does not preview any new car but instead previews plans for the designs of its upcoming electric vehicles. Genesis, the luxury arm of Hyundai, previously revealed plans to go fully electric by the year 2030.
Speaking about the new X Speedium Coupe Concept, Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer of Genesis said, "This car is an open-door moment in Genesis' journey towards our future EV design. This isn't a show car - it's a look into our design processes as we explore ideas for the next wave of EVs, one that incorporates Genesis' DNA."
The name Speedium in the electric concept coupe's name is taken from the Inje Speedium race track in South Korea. The racetrack also lens itself to the name of the paint colour used for the Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept which has been dubbed Inje Green.
Speaking about the design of the new Genesis concept, the X Speedium's styling is an evolution of the one seen in last year's X concept. The front end of the new X Speedium Coupe concept is dominated by Genesis's signature 'Two Line' headlight design which incorporates the daytime running lamps with the high and low beams.
The lights stretch across the front of the concept vehicle and then work across the flanks of the X Speedium concept ending next to the doors of the coupe while also skipping past the front wheel arches. The front end of the Genesis X Speedium also features a closed-off grille section unlike the mesh unit found on the X concept from last year.
The sides of the Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept are dominated by flared out wheel arches that play host to some rather snazzy diamond-cut alloy wheels. Other notable features on the sides of the concept car include the gently curving roofline, the ultra-slim digital rearview mirrors and the twin lines that flare up just ahead of the rear quarter windows.
At the rear of the concept, we find the twin taillights that are already seen on multiple Genesis vehicles. Other features include the large ducktail spoiler which hosts the third brake light that sports a v-shaped kink in the centre. Also seen at the rear are twin diffuser elements on either side of the rear bumper.
Genesis hasn't revealed any details about the electric powertrain of the X Speedium Coupe Concept, however, any car based on it is expected to be based on the Hyundai Group's E-GMP platform. The E-GMP platform supports up to 800V charging and a range of up to 500 kilometres. The most powerful vehicle based on the platform is the Kia EV6 GT which produces 577bhp and can hit 100km/h from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds.
Thoughts on the Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept
The Genesis X Speedium Coupe Concept is a look into the future of the brand that plans to go fully electric by the year 2030. If future Genesis models look anything like this concept, they should have people queuing up at the showrooms.
