Italian supercar marque Ferrari has released the first teaser image of its upcoming SUV, codenamed 'Purosangue' (Italian for thoroughbred). The Ferrari Purosangue SUV will make its official debut later this year.

The teaser image released by Ferrari's Instagram page gives us a good look at the sports car marque's first-ever SUV from the front. The headlights are quite sleek and look to be a more radical take on the ones found on the Roma grand tourer. The SUV also seems to sport some rather large air intakes on each side with a large central air dam in the centre that bears the famous Prancing Horse emblem.

The Purosangue SUV has also been spotted earlier in the wild and those leaked images have revealed that the newest vehicle to bear the Ferrari badge isn't that much of a high rider. Instead, it looks to be a replacement for the GTC4Lusso estate albeit a slightly high riding one.

Any mention of the Ferrari SUV, which has been codenamed 'Purosangue', is enough to get the brand's most rabid fans foaming at the mouth in anger. However, the latest teaser from Ferrari's own Instagram page just confirmed the news that what many of the brand's fans consider 'sacrilegious' is only a little time away from actually hitting the streets.

Despite the foaming fans, the Italian marque has pressed forward with its plans to release what it calls a Ferrari Utility Vehicle. Ferrari has confirmed that the new Purosangue SUV will be making its official debut though official details are still scarce about the powertrain that will drive this new class of vehicle from Ferrari.

Ferrari currently has three major powertrains available to be slotted under the bonnet of the Purosangue. Its 6.5-litre V12 is known for its power and vocal expressiveness. Considering that the GTC4Lusso also featured a V12, there is a chance that Ferrari may bring this rather vocally impressive powerplant out for yet another hurrah. However, it does appear more likely that the Ferrari could go down the hybrid route with the Purosangue with either the electrified V8 powertrain from the 986bhp SF90 Stradale or the new hybrid V6 platform found in the 296 GTB that produces 819bhp.

Whatever engine Ferrari does plonk under the bonnet of the Purosangue, it is expected to be paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox seen in other Prancing Horse models along with a 4-wheel drive system similar to the one found on the old GTC4Lusso or maybe the one seen on SF90 Stradale. If the Purosangue does adopt the SF90's powertrain setup it could very well become the second Ferrari that is partially front-wheel-drive.

Thoughts on the Ferrari Purosangue

The Purosangue seems to be the antithesis of what every 'fan-atic' Tifosi would consider a Ferrari to be. However, the company has seen the writing on the wall, ie: the success of the Lamborghini Urus and the Aston Martin DBX - and looks set to go where it has never ventured before.

Hopefully, the new Purosangue will live up to its name and be a thoroughbred Ferrari instead of a bonkers trail blasting lunatic. Let's hope it will be something that will leave the Tifosi scratching their heads wondering what all the fuss was about. Wouldn't that be a proper curveball?
