Italian supercar manufacturer Ferrari has revealed the 296 GTS convertible supercar. The new Ferrari 296 GTS is the drop-top version of the Italian marque's 296 GTB V6-hybrid supercar.
Ferrari 296 GTS Specs & Dimensions
The Ferrari 296 GTS is powered by the same 120-degree 3.0-litre V6 engine that produces 654bhp at 8,000rpm The engine is aided by a single 164bhp electric motor that brings the total output of the hybrid powertrain 819bhp and 740Nm of peak torque.
The hybrid Ferrari 296 GTS sends all its power to the rear wheels via an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The Ferrari 296 GTS sprints from 0-100km/h in just 2.9 seconds. 0-200km/h takes just 7.6 seconds and the top speed is in excess of 330km/h. The Ferrari 296 GTS can come to a complete stop from 200km/h in just 107 metres.
The Ferrari 296 GTS is 4,565mm long, 1,958mm wide, and 1,191mm tall. The wheelbase of the drop-top 296 GTS is 2,600mm long. The front track of the convertible Ferrari 296 GTS supercar is 1,665mm wide while the rear track is slightly less wide at 1,632mm.
The Ferrari 296 GTS weighs 1,540 kilogrammes (dry) with a 40.5% (front)/ 59.5% (rear) weight distribution and its fuel tank can hold 65-litres of high octane petrol.
The Ferrari 296 GTS sits on 20-inch wheels shod with 245/35 ZR20 (front) and 305/35 ZR20 tyres. The 296 GTS features 398mm discs at the front and 360mm units at the rear.
The Asseto Fiorano package significantly boosts the aero performance of the 296 GTS while helping cut down on the weight of the supercar, which is already 70 kilos heavier than its coupe sibling.
The Asseto Fiorano package features adjustable Multimatic shock absorbers optimised for track use, high downforce carbon-fibre appendages on the front bumper (that add 10 kilos of downforce), and more extensive use of lightweight materials such as carbon-fibre for both cabin and exterior. With the Asseto Fiorano pack, the 296 GTS produces 360 kilogrammes of downforce at 250km/h.
Ferrari 296 GTS Design
The Ferrari 296 GTS remains mostly unchanged compared to the 296 GTB in terms of looks despite the addition of a folding hardtop roof that folds away into a new section in the engine compartment area just behind the seats. The roof can fold into and out of its new bay in just 14 seconds at speeds of up to 45km/h.
The addition of the folding rooftop has required a few subtle changes to the design of the rear end of the car. These include reworked flying buttresses and a bigger gap between the roof and the aero-bridge section.
Step inside and the Ferrari 296 GTS remains unchanged when compared to its hardtop sibling except for the addition of a few flaps to reduce buffeting when the roof is down. This means that the 296 GTS features a large display behind the steering wheel along with a secondary display for the passenger.
Thoughts On the Ferrari 296 GTS
The Ferrari 296 GTS is the drop-top sibling to the 296 GTB, the first-ever V6 supercar to ever wear the Ferrari nameplate. The 296 GTS takes the GTB's brilliance and dials it up to 11. This is thanks to the fact that customers now have the option to drop the top to enjoy the wind in their hair and the sound of that sonorous V6.
