Automobile Sales February 2022: Commercial Vehicle Sector Looks Promising
Automobile sales in February 2022 is on the weaker side as most OEMs have reported a significant drop in sales. Despite overcoming the semiconductor shortage issues, automotive manufacturers are now indirectly facing the consequences of the Russia-Ukraine crisis.

Moreover, the two-wheeler segment is also looking pretty dull and does not show any signs of immediate recovery. However, the commercial vehicle segment has been looking positive for some time now.

Speaking about passenger vehicles, the decline in sales of Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai has affected the overall performance numbers despite Tata Motors and Mahindra showing astonishing levels of YoY sales growth.

Maruti Suzuki claims to have witnessed a YoY decline of 7.4 per cent as the Indo-Japanese brand managed to sell just 1,33,948 units in February 2022. Moreover, the total domestic sales of the Maruti Suzuki stood at 1,37,607 units, which is still less than what the company has achieved during last year at the same time.

Hyundai on the other hand also faced a -15 YoY growth as the South Korean automaker managed to sell just 44,050 units in February 2022. However, Tata Motors and Mahindra's YoY sales figures were positive with 47 and 80 per cent YoY sales growth, respectively.

Speaking about positive YoY sales performance, manufacturers such as Kia, MG Motor, Volkswagen and Skoda have witnessed positive sales growth. Whereas, Toyota, Honda, Nissan have witnessed a significant decline in YoY sales performance.

Coming to two-wheelers, the YoY sales performance for most manufacturers have become a matter of concern as the demand for two-wheelers has taken a hit, especially in rural areas.
Though Hero Motocorp continues to dominate the segment, YoY sales have gone down by almost 27 per cent for motorcycles and 52 per cent for scooters.

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) also reported a 31 per cent drop in YoY sales performance as the company managed to sell just 2.85 lakh units as opposed to last year's 4.11 lakh units (February 2021).

Despite attractive new launched, TVS Motor also witnessed an almost 11 per cent drop in YoY sales figures as the company managed to sell just 1.73 lakh units in February 2022.

The commercial vehicle sector looked very promising in February 2022 as all major commercial vehicle manufacturers reported positive growth.
Tata Motors showed a strong performance in the commercial vehicle sector by selling 33,894 units in February 2022, resulting in 9 per cent YoY sales growth.

Mahindra more than doubled its sales in February 2022 in terms of YoY sales performance by selling 23,978 units. In comparison, Mahindra could only sell 11,559 units in February 2021.

Other commercial vehicle manufacturers such as Bajaj, Ashok Leyland, TVS Motor, and VECV also showed growth.

Thoughts About Auto Sales In February 2022
Overall, automobile sales have gone down in February 2022 for almost all manufacturers. However, the market looks positive as many manufacturers are lined up to launch their new products in the Indian automotive market.
