World's Most Powerful Luxury SUV Enters Production - First Customer Awaits
The Aston Martin DBX 707, the world's most powerful luxury SUV still powered by an internal combustion engine has entered production.
The Aston Martin DBX 707, the world's most powerful luxury SUV still powered by an internal combustion engine has entered production.
The world's first customer Aston Martin DBX recently rolled out off the SUV's prodcution facility at St Athan, Wales. The first DBX 707 intended for a customer was painted in a deep shade of blue and is expected to be delivered to its owner in the very near future.
So just what is it that allows Aston Martin to call the DBX 707, the world's most powerful luxury SUV? The answer lies under the bonnet of this go faster version of Aston Martin's first ever SUV.
The Aston Martin DBX 707 is powered by the Mercedes-Benz M177 engine which is hand built by the German marque's power mentalist department - AMG. The M177 is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo engine that uses wet sump lubrication.
Under the bonnet of the DBX 707, the M177 engine from AMG is at its frutiest level as it has been modified by Aston Martin. The British carmaker's engineers tweaked the engine and gave it new turbochargers with ball bearing which upped the power output of the motor to 697bhp (707PS, hence the name) and 900Nm of peak torque.
Along with the AMG powerplant, the DBX 707 like other V8 Astons in the current lineup borrows its gearbox from the power mad division of Mercedes. The 9-speed dual clutch transmission on the DBX 707 sends the power and torque generated by the powerplant to all four wheels and it features a wet clutch and revised gear ratios compared to the version found in the 'regular' DBX.
To ensure the more powerful engine recieves enough air to combust the fuel while also keeping itself cool, Aston Martin has fitted the DBX 707 with a larger grille. The new grille claims Aston Martin is 27 per cent larger than the one fitted on the standard DBX SUV.
So what do all these changes combine to deliver. Well Aston Martin claims that the DBX707 will sprint from 0-60miles/hour (96.5km/h) in just 3.1 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 311km/h, which is currently the highest claimed top speed for an SUV currently in production.
To help deal with all the extra power under the bonnet, Aston Martin has upgraded the DBX 707's brakes and suspension setups when compared to the standard version of the British luxury SUV. The DBX 707 now features carbon ceramic brakes as standard. These massive rotors measure 420mm at the front and 390mm at the rear and feature six-piston callipers all around. The switch to carbon ceramic has also resulted in a weight reduction of 40.5 kilogrammes.
The DBX 707 also features a revised version of the three-chamber air suspension setup found on the standard DBX. The DBX 707 features a new chassis tune to deal with the additional power from its AMG powerplant and suspension tweaks that reduce body roll while also bringing down forward pitch and vertical movement under heavy braking. Tweaks to the electronic anti-roll system ensure that the new DBX is a lot more agile through the corners as well.
Speaking as the first DBX 707 rolled out of its Welsh production facility, Aston Martin Lagonda Chief Operating Officer Michael Straughan said, "Aston Martin is immensely proud to be manufacturing industry-leading products like DBX707 from a world-class facility in Wales, and we are delighted to see the very first model completed."
Thoughts On The Aston Martin DBX 707
The Aston Martin DBX 707 is one of the last big hurrahs of the internal combustion engine and it blows its own tune thanks to a monstrous AMG powerplant growling under its bonnet. While it may not be as quick as the Tesla Model X Plaid, you sure as hell won't be able to crazy speeds while travelling in absolute luxury as you do in the DBX 707 in that electric missile from America. Till the government's tell them to stop, here's us hoping that botloads of the go-faster Aston SUVs hit the roads around the world.
