2022 Suzuki S-Cross Gets Strong Hybrid Engine – How It Differs From The One In The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara
While Maruti Suzuki discontinued the S-Cross in India, the crossover continues to be on sale in more than a few countries. That being said, Suzuki has now launched the Strong Hybrid version of the S-Cross in the international markets. However, it is not the same as the Strong Hybrid powertrain in the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
Earlier, Suzuki had launched a heavily updated iteration of the S-Cross crossover in the international markets back in 2021. However, like in most cases, we didn't receive that update and the model was subsequently discontinued from the Indian market.
Thanks to this heavy update, the new Suzuki S-Cross, underpinned by an updated version of the Global C platform looks a lot more SUV-ish than the model it replaced. Thanks to this new styling, sales figures also improved by a decent margin in the international markets.
Moreover, unlike the Maruti Suzuki S-Cross sold in India, the international crossover model is powered by a more powerful 1.4-litre turbocharged engine with mild-hybrid tech. This engine produces 125bhp of peak power and 235Nm of peak torque. - Thanks to this powertrain setup, the international variants of the Suzuki S-Cross is approximately 21bhp and 97 Nm more powerful than the variants sold in India.
Speaking about powertrain options, as mentioned earlier, Suzuki has now launched a new strong hybrid engine option for the S-Cross models in the international markets. However, this is not the same powertrain seen in the strong hybrid version of the recently launched Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV.
This powertrain in the Suzuki S-Cross uses one Motor Generator Unit (MGU) and a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, Dual-Jet engine. In combined form, this engine produces 114bhp of peak power and 135Nm of peak torque.
In comparison, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara uses a 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated, Atkinson cycle engine and an electric motor. Combined, this powertrain produces 114bhp of peak power, whereas the torque output stands at 122Nm for the ICE and 144Nm for the electric motor.
In addition to that, the engine in the 2022 Suzuki S-Cross Strong Hybrid uses a 6-speed AMT unit (AGS) instead of the eCVT gearbox used in the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara SUV.
Moreover, the MGU in the S-Cross not only drives the front wheels in EV mode but it also assists the engine while accelerating and fills in the torque gap while the clutch is disengaging for a smooth gear shift. In addition to that, the MGU is also enabled while engaging the reverse gear.
That being said, the Suzuki S-Cross is also available with the Japanese automaker's famed All-Grip all-wheel-drive system. However, this all-wheel-drive system is only available with the mild-hybrid powertrain, much like the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara.
Though, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara is a very feature-rich model with features such as a 360-degree surround-view camera, a 9-inch infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a panoramic sunroof, automatic climate control and many more.
The new Suzuki S-Cross goes one-up as the crossover in some countries can be optioned with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which includes driver assistance and active safety systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, rear cross-traffic alert, emergency autonomous braking and many more.
Thoughts On The New Suzuki S-Cross
With many countries supporting electrified and partially electrified vehicles, the introduction of the S-Cross equipped with a strong hybrid powertrain will help boost sales in the international markets.
