Car sales in India in the month of November dropped once again despite the festive Diwali season with overall sales numbers dropping by 14.3% year-over-year.

As per the latest reports, carmakers sold 245,262 units in the month of November 2021 compared to 286,235 cars sold over the same 30 day period in 2020.

Many carmakers including the nation's two largest manufacturers of passenger cars – Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai – saw a drop in sales figures. Maruti Suzuki sold a total of 109,722 units in the month of November 2021, a drop of 19.2 per cent compared to the previous year's sales figures of 135,755. Hyundai saw its sales numbers drop by 24.2 per cent as it sold just 37,001 units in November 2021 compared to the 48,800 vehicles that were sold in the same month in 2020.

Other carmakers that saw their sales numbers drop were Kia which saw a drop of 32.4 per cent, Honda which declined by 45.4 per cent, Renault which saw sales drop by an astounding 50.4 per cent and MG which contracted by 40.4 per cent.

However, it was not all bad news in the year-over-year figures. Tata Motors saw sales numbers rise by 37.6 per cent to 29,780 units compared to November 2020's sales numbers of 21,640. Mahindra also saw a marginal increase in sales numbers, registering a growth of 8 per cent despite a slowdown in production.

The FCA group (Fiat, Jeep and other brands under the Stellantis umbrella in India) increased its sales by 48.4 per cent in November 2021 (1,052 units) compared to the same period last year (709). Toyota saw its numbers rise by 52.8 per cent to 13,002 units in November 2021.

However, it was the two VW Group companies – Volkswagen and Skoda – along with Nissan that more than doubled their numbers in the penultimate month of 2021. Skoda saw its sales numbers increase by 108 per cent to 2,196 units in November 2021 compared to 1,056 units in the same month last year. Volkswagen did even better registering a growth of 123.4 per cent in November 2021 (3,154 units) compared to just 1,412 units sold in the same period in 2020. However, it was Nissan that really blew everyone out of the water in terms of percentage gains. The Japanese carmaker sold 2,651 units in the month of November 2021, an increase of 160.7 per cent compared to the 1,017 units it sold in the penultimate month of 2020.

The Indian car industry also saw a contraction in sales numbers in November compared to the previous month. Carmakers sold 260,067 units in the month of October 2021, which means that car sales in November compared to the previous month dropped by 5.7 per cent. Almost every carmaker was in the red compared to October with only Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen and newcomers Citroen showing any growth in sales numbers.

The Indian car industry is slowly but surely trying to get back on its feet after suffering an insanely bad 1-2 combo of the Coronavirus and the chip shortage. Hopefully, sales will increase as the country and the rest of the world start dealing with both issues. However, the arrival of the new Omricron variant of the damned virus may cause problems in the future.
