MG Hatchback & Compact SUV EVs India Launch In Pipeline: Prices Expected To Start Around Rs 10 Lakh

MG India could bring EVs costing much less than the Rs 20 lakh mark. This plan may include a compact SUV and a small hatchback.

From this, it is quite clear that MG's plans for introducing EVs in India are quite aggressive, compared to Volkswagen Group's 'Wait and Watch' game. At present, MG has one electric vehicle for the Indian market, the MG ZS EV.

However, the MG ZS EV is priced at the premium spectrum with a starting price of around Rs 21.00 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 24.18 lakh (ex-showroom). At this price point, MG ZS EV will only attract interest from the premium customers who are looking for a second car for their city runabouts.

Under MG India's latest plans on introducing EVs for the Indian market, there might be ideas to introduce an affordable yet practical small hatchback that could be priced below the Rs 10 lakh mark.

This under 'Rs 10 lakh' pricing will not only play a crucial role in MG India's future in the country, but it could also change the game in the sub-10 lakh category.

According to sources, the upcoming all-electric small hatchback from MG will be based on the SAIC Baojun E200, which was showcased at the Delhi-NCR Auto Expo last year.

Speaking about the Baojun E200, it is roughly 2.5 meters long and is powered by a 39hp electric motor. Performance-wise, the Baojun E200 can reach a top speed of around 100kmph, while the maximum range on a full charge is around 210-270kms as per the NEDC test cycle.

However, for India, the 2.5metre won't be a practical buy for many customers. So, MG might introduce it with some changes to incorporate at least four people and their luggage.

This also goes in accordance with MG's mantra to be successful in India. The company said to be successful in India, the vehicle must have "good performance, design and ground clearance".

At present, India's EV charge is led by Tata's Nexon EV by selling more than 3,800 units from its day of launch. Though this number may not look catching, once you look past the raw numbers, you can see that the Tata Nexon EV dominates the India EV market with a market share of 64 per cent.

MG's current electric car for India is the ZS EV, and it comes with a 44.5kWh battery pack and delivers a maximum range of 419kms on a single charge. However, this ambitious plan of MG India is yet to receive a green light from its parent company, SAIC, and the new budget models are still far away at 2024.

MG India's plans are built on expectations of selling at least 20,000 EVs per year by looking at EV's sales performance in India during FY2021, where more than 5900 units of EVs were sold in the country.

Thoughts About The MG Hatchback & Compact SUV EVs Launching In India

We are yet to receive an affordable EV from MG Motor India. Looks like our prayers will be answered soon. MG India might be able to attract the attention of Indian buyers by introducing an EV that undercuts the Nexon EV, which is currently the best-selling electric vehicle in India. With the growing EV infrastructure, the four-wheeler passenger electric vehicle segment is about to receive a massive boost in the coming years.
