Mahindra XUV700 Vs Tata Safari. Whether you are in the market for these 7-seater SUVs or not, this would be a question in your mind if you are a true Indian automotive fanatic.
The two Indian automotive giants have a long history of rivalry when it comes to their flagship SUVs (Mahindra Alturas G4 is essentially a rebadged Ssangyong Rexton, so that doesn't count).
So, let's judge these SUVs in five categories; Design, Features, Safety, Powertrain, and Price.
Design is subjective, some people like the design of Mahindra XUV700, while some people prefer the design of Tata Safari. For the sake of this comparison, we have to compare.
From the outside, the Mahindra XUV700 looks far more sophisticated, especially with those flush door handles. In comparison, the Tata Safari looks far more imposing and feels brawnier, which is essential for an SUV.
Moving on to the inside, the Mahindra XUV700 claws back the lost ground with its two massive screens that heighten the sense of sophistication inside and the Tata Safari pales in comparison.
Again, it boils down to your personal preferences. If you like a brawny SUV, go for the Tata Safari. If you like an SUV that feels sophisticated, buy the Mahindra XUV700
Both these SUVs come packed with features, but if you are keen on automobiles, you may think that Mahindra XUV700 will win this test hands-on. However, things are a little different once you dig deeper.
Features-wise, both these SUVs pack in a large touchscreen infotainment unit with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charger, rear AC vents, panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable driver seat, electronic parking brake, drive modes and many more.
However, both these SUVs also offer unique features to their customers. The XUV700 offers features like a fully digital instrument cluster, Alexa voice commands, a 360-degree camera and a few more.
Whereas the Tata Safari on the other hand offers more passenger-centric features like the captain seats for the middle-row, seat ventilation on the middle-row, ‘Boss-Mode' and a few more.
If you are chauffeur driven, the Tata Safari clearly favour you. On the other hand, the features in Mahindra XUV700 is more driver-focused.
Both Tata and Mahindra are now producing some of the safest vehicles in India. There is no doubt that their flagship SUVs will deviate from this trend.
Both these SUVs offer everything to keep you safe from a crash by offering excellent safety equipments such as surround airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, Traction Control and many more.
However, the Mahindra XUV700 has a clear lead by offering active safety systems that help prevent a crash. These active safety systems include features such as adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, auto emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, road sign recognition and a few more.
The Tata Safari offers only one engine and two options for the gearbox. The diesel unit is a 2.0-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged unit with 167.62 bhp and 350Nm of torque. Moreover, the Tata Safari is only available in a front-wheel-drive layout(SUV?)
On the other hand, Mahindra offers a buffet in terms of the powertrain. The engine options in the XUV700 include one petrol engine, and a diesel engine available in two states of tune. The gearbox option includes either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The petrol unit is a 2.0-litre engine with 197.13 bhp and 380Nm of torque. On the other hand, the diesel engine lower state of tune produces 152.87 bhp and 360Nm of torque, whereas the more potent tune produces 182.37 bhp and 450Nm torque (torque is reduced o 420Nm in manual transmission variants).
Moreover, the Mahindra XUV700 is the only SUV in its segment to offer an all-wheel-drive setup.
It is true that Mahindra XUV700 has a lower starting price at Rs 11.99 lakh(ex-showroom). However the diesel, 7-seater variant starts at Rs 15.19 lakh(ex-showroom).
This means that the Mahindra XUV700 is almost Rs 20,000 more expensive than the base Tata Safari.
However, the top-end Mahindra XUV700 with automatic transmission and luxury pack costs just Rs 21.59 lakh (ex-showroom), which is a bargain compared to the Tata Safari XZA+ Gold priced at Rs 23.17 lakh (ex-showroom).
Overall, the Mahindra not only offers an aggressive starting price on its XUV700, but it maintains aggressive pricing throughout its entire trim levels, and Tata fails to do so in Tata Safari.
Thoughts About Mahindra XUV700 And Tata Safari
From this comparison, it becomes clear that Tata Motors is offering a more passenger-centric SUV, that is designed to munch miles on the Indian highways.
The Mahindra XUV700 on the other hand is a more rounded product, it offers decent mile-munching capability, tech-savvy features, and a stronger engine line up with more choices. On top of all that, Mahindra is the only SUV that offers all-wheel drive in its segment.
