BMW iX SUV Launch Set For Dec 13 — Here's Everything You Need To Know
German luxury carmaker BMW is all set to launch the all-new iX electric SUV in India next month on the 13th of December. The BMW iX was launched in Europe earlier this year.
The BMW iX was first revealed in concept guise as the Vision iNext at the 2018 Paris Motor Show. Two years later in November 2020, the electric iX SUV made its official debut. The SUV went on sale a few months later in 2021 across Europe.
BMW iX Variants — Specs, Battery Pack & Range
The BMW iX is offered in two guises — xDrive40 and xDrive50. Both variants of the new BMW iX electric SUV are expected to arrive in India in December.
The iX xDrive40 is the less powerful of the two variants of the all-new BMW electric SUV. The BMW iX xDrive40 is powered by two electric motors (one on each axle) that combine together to produce 322bhp and 630Nm of peak torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a single-speed automatic gearbox. BMW claims that the iX xDrive40 will sprint 0-100km/h in 6.1 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 200km/h.
Powering the dual motor, all-wheel drive setup of the xDrive40 variant of the iX SUV is a 76.6kWh battery pack that has a range of 425 kilometres as per the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP) testing.
The BMW iX xDrive50 is the current flagship of the range and it too uses a dual motor, all-wheel drive setup. However, in the xDrive50, the volume has been turned up to 11. The dual motor setup produces 516bhp and 765Nm of peak torque which is sent to all four wheels via a single-speed gearbox. The xDrive50 sprints from 0-100km/h in just 4.6 seconds though the top speed is still limited to 200km/h.
Powering the more powerful dual motor setup is a massive 111.5kWh battery pack. The larger battery pack helps the iX xDrive50 deliver a WLTP rated range of 630 kilometres.
Both the xDrive40 and xDrive50 are offered with a 11kW AC charging as standard. The xDrive40 only supports 150kW fast DC charging while the xDrive50 ups the DC fast charging rate to 195kW.
The xDrive40 and xDrive50 can charge up its large battery pack from 10 to 80 per cent in just 31 minutes. The xDrive50's larger battery takes 35 minutes to fast charge from 10 to 80 per cent. The xDrive50 can add up to 145 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes.
The BMW iX is expected to go up against the likes of the Audi e-tron and the Mercedes EQC SUVs. The new BMW iX is expected to be imported into India as a completely built unit (CBU) and prices are expected to be in excess of Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom) when the SUV is finally launched next month.
Thoughts On the BMW iX
The BMW iX is a large electric SUV from the Bavarian luxury carmaker. With its unique design and insane range figures, the iX is expected to be a hit among luxury SUV buyers in India hoping to go green.
