The year 2020 saw a complete disruption in vehicle sales not only in India but across the world due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of safety measures, the central government ordered a complete nationwide lockdown between March and May 2020. The lockdown forced all businesses and operations to shut down entirely, which took a severe toll, especially on the Indian auto industry.
Now, a few months later, the lockdown regulations have been relaxed. People have started to come out and resume day-to-day travels within city limits. However, with social distancing and safety measures still in place, people are still skeptical about using public transport - private vehicles are now the preferred choice.
In the current situation, a hatchback makes for a sensible buy. It offers the convenience of personal travel while also offering the safety and security of a four-wheeler; all this while also being affordable.
One such model in the segment which tick marks all of the above is the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. The hatchback has been on sale in the Indian market for over two decades now, and has become a household name thanks to its unmatchable level of trust and popularity it enjoys.
First launched back in December 1999, Maruti Suzuki WagonR became an instant hit in the country for several reasons. To begin with, the WagonR came with a very unique design at the time - a tall boxy design which helped earn it the popular 'tall-boy' tag. Maruti Suzuki even offered a number of features, such as swept-back headlamps, chrome finish on the grille, body-coloured bumpers and others which have become standard now - these were a big deal back in the early 2000s.
Over the years, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR has had over three generation changes and multiple other facelifts and yet manages to remain as popular as ever. Even to this day, WagonR is in the list of top-10 bestselling cars month-on-month.
The current Maruti Suzuki WagonR is the third-generation iteration of the hatchback that was launched back in 2019. The hatchback now comes powered by two petrol engine options along with the option of a factory-fitted CNG technology paired to the BS6 compliant 1.0-litre petrol engine.
Apart from the powerful engine options, the Big New WagonR also has AGS and S-CNG technology on offer along with several other features which make it the most suitable post-lockdown car purchase.
Here are the top 5 reasons which further illustrate why the Maruti Suzuki WagonR is the perfect city car:
1. Style & Looks
Maruti Suzuki WagonR has always had a distinct silhouette and as mentioned before, the hatchback has undergone a number of changes and updates over the years.
The Big New WagonR hatchback comes with a lot of design and styling features which give it an attractive look. This includes the chrome elements all around, large swept back headlamps, long vertically-stacked tail lights, stylishly designed wheel cover, floating roof-like design on the C-pillar, and many more.
The interiors of the Maruti Suzuki WagonR also come with a dual-tone colour scheme which adds to the airy feel in the cabin. The dashboard is well laid out and has a centre console along with the instrument cluster. Lest we forget, the view of the road ahead is quite clear as well.
The tall-boy design of Maruti Suzuki WagonR has made the hatchback extremely popular. Apart from giving it a sense of uniqueness, the tall-boy look also makes the WagonR's interiors more practical.
The tall roofline along with the large windows makes the cabin feel quite spacious. The tall roofline also allows for easy ingress and egress of passengers.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR comes with excellent seats, both at the front and rear. The front seats come with plenty of space and are also adjustable, offering excellent comfort for almost all people (tall or short). The rear seats are also wide and can easily seat three passengers without any hassle.
Rounding of the interiors is the impressive boot space of 341-litres with the rear seats upright. Maruti Suzuki has gone one-step ahead to offer the WagonR with a 60:40 rear seat split, further allowing for extended luggage capacity, whenever required.
3. Features & Performance
The latest-generation Maruti Suzuki WagonR hatchback comes packed with features and equipment. Some of these include power windows, electrically adjustable & foldable ORVMs, remote keyless entry, turn signals integrated on the outside mirrors, instrument cluster with additional information such as gear position indicator, gear shift indicator, instantaneous and average fuel consumption levels, distance to empty, and many others.
The hatchback was one of the first models to feature the brand's SmartPlay Studio infotainment system. This comes in the form of a 7-inch touchscreen display with smartphone connectivity features including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity.
In terms of performance, the Maruti Suzuki WagonR is powered by two petrol engines, along with a factory-fitted CNG technology as well on the 1.0-litre unit.
The smaller 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine on the WagonR produces 67bhp and 90Nm of torque. The 1.2-litre 4-cylinder engine, on the other hand, churns out 82bhp and 113Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a standard five-speed manual with the optional AGS (Auto Gear Shift) transmission also on offer. Mileage figures on the two petrol engines are 21.79 km/l* for the 1.0-litre unit and 20.52km/l* from the 1.2-litre engine.
The 1.0-litre CNG powered variant on the Maruti Suzuki WagonR produces 58.3bhp and 78Nm of torque and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. The mileage figure of the CNG variants stands at 32.52km/kg*.
*All mileage figures are ARAI certified
Maruti Suzuki WagonR also comes with a host of safety features and equipment. This includes dual airbags, ABS with EBD, seatbelt pretensioners, speed-sensitive auto door lock, rear parking camera, central locking and many others.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR hatchback is based on the brand's HEARTECT platform, an architecture that is built using advanced & ultra high-tensile steels. This results in enhanced structural rigidity and a better power-to-weight ratio.
5. Trust of Maruti Suzuki
Maruti Suzuki India Limited is the largest four-wheeler manufacturer in the country. The company has been in the Indian market since the early 1980s and currently has over 50% of the market share in the Indian auto industry. Maruti Suzuki also has the largest number of customer sales and service touchpoints in the country.
Over the years, Maruti Suzuki cars have developed a reputation of producing reliable, stylish, powerful and safe models for the Indian market, all offered at affordable prices. Each one of the models sold by Maruti Suzuki is perfectly suited for Indian driving conditions, making it one of the most trustworthy car brands in the market. Further, Maruti Suzuki has also stayed in-line with all the current trends and on many occasions have been trendsetters themselves.
