Mercedes-AMG Cars To Feature E-Turbo Derived From Formula One: Anti-Lag System For Streets

The next-generation Mercedes-AMG cars are set to feature a new electronic-turbo. The new turbocharger has been designed and engineered in partnership with Garrett Motion, who is a leader in turbocharger technologies.

It is one of those time where a racing technology is featured in road cars for the masses. The new system uses a compact electric motor coupled to a conventional exhaust gas turbocharger. The electric motor is mounted on the turbocharger shaft, between the compressor wheel on the fresh-air side and the turbine wheel on the exhaust side, for boost induction.

The electric motor features a 48V electrical system that is used to drive the compressor wheel before the introduction of exhaust gas flow in a process to eliminate turbo lag. What this means is the electric motor spools the turbo until proper pressure is built by the exhaust gases. This will eliminate the initial lag present on the turbocharged engines.

When the engine is running at lower rpm, the amount of the exhaust gas going into the turbo will be less. As a result, the conventional turbo will be spinning at a relatively lower rpm and will not be compressing any air to the engine. This will result in reduced engine power at lower rpm, in other words, turbo-lag.

After the engine reaches higher rpm the turbo starts to spin faster and start compressing air, that is sent to the engine. It will result in better combustion and maximum power delivery. In other words, this is called the turbo-boost.

There are various methods to eliminate the initial lag in turbocharged engines. Most popular would be an inclusion of an additional turbo. In essence, there will two turbos, a low-speed turbo and a high-speed turbo, that will get activated at lower and higher rpm, respectively. Some manufactures use this technology.

Having two turbos will reduce the lag substantially, however, it is not an anti-lag system. To fully cure the initial turbo-lag, the engines should start getting pressurised air right from the start, and to do that, the turbos must build up pressure despite the engine running at lower rpm. For the turbos to work at optimal speeds there needs to be external assistance.

Now coming back to the Mercedes e-turbo, this is where the electric motor comes in and helps rotate the turbo-shaft. The motor spins the shaft to operate under optimal speeds required to compress the air even if the engine is running the lower rpm. It will help with maximum power delivered without the need for exhaust gases to build pressure inside the turbo. With this setup, the lag will be completely cured.

Mercedes-AMG says its new turbocharger can operate at up to 170,000rpm — in the process providing a much higher rate of airflow. The new turbo, electric motor and the electronics system are connected to the combustion engine's cooling circuit for optimal operation and liquid cooling. The setup can also help harvest and store energy when boost is not required.

Turbo-charged engines are not among the popular engines, however, it currently being used by most manufacturers. The turbocharged engines are smaller and can deliver the same power and output as compared to larger capacity (NA) naturally-aspirated engines. However, the power delivery is not as linear and immediate as compared to NA engines. The lack of power on forced induction engines or turbocharged engines are cured by an anti-lag system such as the e-turbo. This should make the turbo engines a little more popular among enthusiasts.
