With the country gearing back to near-normalcy post lockdown, a fresh start is in order. It's not hard to admit that most of us are ready to welcome newness into our lives. The time seems opportune for first-time car buyers to make an informed purchase. It isn't easy for one to make the right choice with the sheer number of options available in the market today.
First-time car buyers are keen on specifics that include smart design, peppy engine performance, ease of urban mobility, and good fuel efficiency, all packed into an affordable price range. If this matches your criteria as well, the recently introduced Maruti Suzuki S-PRESSO mini-SUV deserves your attention!
Maruti Suzuki introduced the S-PRESSO to the Indian masses in September 2019. Since its launch, the SUV-styled offering has been received extremely well and continues to garner great praise for it's cool yet efficient drive.
With SUVs currently in trend, Maruti Suzuki has successfully managed to offer the Indian market just that. The S-PRESSO features an SUV-like stance with upright pillars, flat-bonnet and high ground clearance, making for a roomy cabin. The flared wheel arches with blacked-out bumpers at both ends boosts the S-PRESSO's aggressive stance.
The S-PRESSO combines this SUV-styling with dual elements of compactness and affordability - a perfect combination for anyone looking for a first-time car purchase.
The Maruti Suzuki S-PRESSO is among the very few models in the Indian market to offer customers an SUV under the Rs 5 lakh price range. The S-PRESSO is offered in a range of six variants: STD, LXI, VXI, VXI AGS, VXI+ and VXI+ AGS. Prices for the same range between Rs 3.69 lakh and goes up to Rs 4.91 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom (Delhi).
Stance And The Space Inside
The SUV-styling gives the S-PRESSO more than an appealing stance. The intelligent design allows for expanded space within this pocket SUV, comfortably seating five passengers inside.
To put things into perspective, take note of the S-PRESSO's dimensions: The mini-SUV measures 3565mm in length, 1520mm in width and 1564mm in height. With 180mm of ground clearance, it will have no problem going over any kind of road the country throws its way.
The S-PRESSO also features a roomy boot-space of 270-litres, which can easily accommodate your bags for that quick weekend trip with your friends or family. Maruti Suzuki has also given the hatchback a number of storage space options inside the cabin to safely hold your precious belongings - we say precious as this definitely includes your coffee cup!
Lively Performer, Effortless To Drive
Maruti Suzuki has given the S-PRESSO a cracker of an engine. It is powered by the brand's latest BS6-compliant K-Series 1.0-litre petrol engine. Although only a 998cc engine, it is peppy and responsive owing to the S-PRESSO's smaller form, paired with its incredible lightness.
The three-cylinder engine produces 68bhp of power and 90Nm of peak torque, and is mated to a standard five-speed manual gearbox. The enhanced torque enables the engine to perform across the rev range. This comes in handy especially when you have five people seated inside. More on the additional advantage of having a smaller capacity engine, later.
The S-PRESSO can be seen maneuvering through the urban jungle replete with heavy traffic conditions. Taking this into account, Maruti Suzuki has given the hatchback an automatic transmission option with the brand's AGS (Auto Gear Shift) technology. With AGS transmission kicking in, the driver can relax and let the car do all the work in navigating bumper-to-bumper traffic.
For the driver, the SUV-styled hatchback elevates the driver to a commanding position and allows for a good field-of-view all-around. Featuring a best-in-class 4.5m turning radius, the S-PRESSO can easily traverse through endless gullies and traffic-heavy roads in the country.
Available With Factory-Fitted CNG
The S-PRESSO is also available with a factory-fitted CNG kit becoming a part of the brand's Green Million Initiative. The company is committed to the cause of providing cleaner air for the country by making and selling more CNG cars. This is supported as emission values are significantly lesser when compared to conventional petrol engines.
Maruti Suzuki S-CNG cars come equipped with Dual Interdependent ECU and Intelligent Injection System, which ensures enhanced and consistent performance along with high-fuel efficiency across terrains.
The CNG model uses the same 1.0-litre engine that produces 58bhp at 5500rpm and 70Nm of torque at 3500rpm. The CNG-powered unit is paired with a standard five-speed manual gearbox. It is important to note that this model returns increased fuel-efficiency when compared to petrol-powered variations, lowering running costs further. In a bid to support green initiatives, all S-CNG customers will become a part of the brand's project to save the environment.
A sweeping advantage of the smaller capacity engine is that of fuel-efficiency. The 998cc engine sips fuel making it one among the most fuel-efficient cars currently being sold in the country. According to Maruti Suzuki, the petrol-manual powertrain on the S-PRESSO returns 21.4km/l* fuel efficiency, while the AGS-equipped versions offer even higher mileage figures of 21.7km/l*.
A careful combination of the mileage figure and the 27-litre fuel tank delivers a driving range of over 580 kilometres between trips to the petrol-pump. This means, less waiting to fill-up and more driving to Live It Up.
The S-PRESSO also has an additional ace up its sleeve - customers looking at lowering running costs even further can opt for a factory-fitted CNG kit (offered by Maruti Suzuki). The S-CNG version of the S-PRESSO also offers equally impressive figures of 31.2km/kg*.

Today, DRLs are a hip new trend in the automotive world and Maruti Suzuki has added this to their long list of features on the S-PRESSO. Complementing the design are large halogen headlamps with a chrome-finished grille.
The 14-inch wheel comes with an attractive cover, C-shaped tail-lamps, colour-coordinated ORVMs, and an integrated roof spoiler, only affixing further freshness to it's design.
Apart from offering a good amount of space inside the cabin, the car is also packed with features that give the cabin a pleasant aesthetic. Occupants are treated to an air-conditioning system that is quick to cool in the blistering summers and heat up just as easily during cold winter days. The centrally-mounted instrument cluster offers a host of useful information.
For us, the absolute highlight of the cabin has to be the seven-inch touchscreen SmartPlay Studio infotainment system. The best part? It can be operated using a smartphone via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
Alternatively, the infotainment system can also be controlled using the chunky multi-function steering wheels with mounted controls. In a simple yet thoughtful quick safety feature, phone calls can be received and ended without taking your hands off the steering wheel using the Bluetooth smartphone pairing function.
Maruti Suzuki has added a couple of supplementary features to provide enhanced convenience while seated in the S-PRESSO hatchback. This includes internal wing mirror adjustment, front power windows, rear parcel tray and much more.
Passenger safety is a top-priority for both customers and manufacturers. The S-PRESSO like any other model from Maruti Suzuki comes with several safety features. The most important of them being the 'Heartect' platform, which offers a light yet stronger underbody, adding to the car's structural strength.
Other passenger safety equipment on the S-PRESSO includes dual front airbags, remote central locking, seat-belt pre-tensioners, speed-sensitive door lock, parking brake warning, ABS, vehicle immobiliser and rear parking sensors; among others.
Many Shades Of Liveliness
Targeted towards the young, urban, first-time car buyer, the Maruti Suzuki S-PRESSO is rightly offered in a range of vibrant paint schemes, which capture the imagination of its target audience. These vibrant paint schemes include Pearl Starry Blue, Metallic Granite Grey, Metallic Silky Silver, Solid Fire Red, Sizzle Orange & Solid Superior White.
A veteran in the Indian auto space, Maruti Suzuki understands the country's customers like no other. The brand wants to make the S-PRESSO experience unique for its customers. Extending a first level of personalization, Maruti Suzuki offers the S-Presso with a long list of company-provided accessories.
Overall, the Maruti Suzuki S-PRESSO integrates most requirements that are sought after for a first-time buyer. These elements and the reasonable price point make it perfectly suitable for those on the lookout for daily urban commute. A balanced combination of features, performance and mileage; all packed into this mini-SUV make it the ideal city car.
