Tata Motors launched the Nano way back during the March of 2009, and the little car soon became a bestseller for the company. Once called the people's car, the little vehicle seems to have no takers any more. According to regulatory filings of the company, only a single unit has retailed in six months.
Even after Tata Motors also halted production of the vehicle in December 2018, a formal decision to stop production has not been made. Tata Motors say they will continue to retail the Nano on a 'demand' basis. The only other company to adopt such a strategy in Maruti Suzuki, specifically for the Gypsy.
The regulatory filings by Tata Motors state that the last Nano was produced by the company in December 2018. The company rolled out 82 units from their Sanand plant near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Tata Motors had mentioned earlier that they would stop production of the Nano from April 2020 as it had no plans to upgrade the vehicle's engine to meet BS-VI requirements, and the new safety regulations.
The Tata Nano features a 624cc four-stroke, water cooled, two-cylinder engine that produces 33bhp of power @ 5,500rpm and 45Nm of peak torque @ 3,500rpm. The vehicle features a 4-speed manual transmission, and is available only in a CNG variant.
The Tata Nano features independent lower wishbone, McPherson Strut suspensions in the front, and independent semi trailing arm with coil spring suspension at the rear. It comes with drum brakes at the front and the rear.
The Tata Nano was launched with the idea that every household in the country could afford a car. It came sans all the frills like power windows and power steering. Even today, the car has nothing outside of seat belts in terms of safety.
The Nano was launched for under the Rs 1.0 lakh mark in 2009, but currently retails at Rs 2.97 lakh, ex-showroom (India).
Thoughts About Tata Halting Production Of The Nano
Good move by Tata Motors. Why keep producing a car that does not retail. It was a brilliant idea when it was launched in 2009, but seems to be stuck in that era. With the new safety regulations in place, and the BS-VI norms coming soon, Tata's decision is justified. We feel the company should stop production completely, but we also understand that they might have some production stock they need to get rid of. Fancy a Nano then?
