Kia Motors are all set to introduce their first product in the Indian market sometime in August 2019. The first Kia product will be an SUV, based on the SP Concept showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo.
Ahead of this, Autocar India has now reported that Kia Motors might introduce a new sportier variant of the upcoming SP SUV in India. The new sportier variant of the Kia SP SUV will come with noticeable differences in its appearance, which will help the SUV stand out from the standard variant.
The differences include a sporty body kit and a racier trim on the inside. However, the main difference will be the more powerful engine. This will be in the form of a 1.4-litre turbo-petrol unit producing over 140bhp. The engine will come mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission with paddle-shifters. The suspension on the sporty SP SUV will also be tuned to provide a sportier drive.
The more powerful 140bhp engine is also being considered for future Kia models. The Japanese carmaker is considering bringing the Cee'd premium hatchback to the Indian market, which might feature this engine.
In comparison, the standard variants of the Kia SP SUV will come with two engine options — 1.5-litre petrol and diesel. Both engines will be BS-IV compliant, which means that Kia will have to update their engines by April 2020, to comply with the upcoming norms. Also, both engines will be mated to manual and automatic gearbox options. The automatic transmission is expected to come with paddle-shifters as standard on the higher variants of the SUV.
The upcoming Kia Motors is expected to come feature-packed while being priced competitively in the Indian market. Kia has already confirmed that their first SUV will be priced in the Rs 10 - 16 lakh range, ex-showroom.
Some of the features expected on the upcoming Kia SP SUV: digital instrument cluster, large infotainment system with voice recognition, heads-up display, 360-degree camera, airbags, rear parking camera/sensors and ABS among others.
Kia Motor India is currently setting up its plant in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh. The plant is expected to be operational by August 2019 and will have an annual production capacity of 3,00,000 units — read all about the Kia plant and their strategies for the Indian market here.
Thoughts On the Kia SP Sport SUV
Kia Motors will enter the Indian market sometime around August 2019. Their first product has been confirmed to be based on the SP Concept. Kia Motor India has already announced that they plan to introduce a new product in India every six months. The Kia SP SUV once launched in India will rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV500 and the upcoming Tata Harrier.
