Government Gives Manufacturers Just 14 Days To Come Up With Roadmap For EV Development
Automobile manufacturers have been given two weeks to come up with a roadmap to enable the sales of electric vehicles. It was just a few days ago that the government had announced a deadline for the sales of electric vehicles.
According to the government, all three wheelers should be electric from April 2023 and all two-wheelers below 150cc should be electric by April 2025. Several automotive manufacturers had expressed their concerns regarding this mandate, and their concerns were true to an extent.
The Indian automotive industry is one of the largest in the world and it is the largest two wheeler market in the world. With such a large market made up of fossil-fueled vehicles, lakhs of people are directly or indirectly employed by the automotive industry.
This industry is also one of the largest contributors to the Indian economy. In a situation where there is very little demand for electric vehicles, if the Indian government imposes a mandate to switch to electricity vehicles, the entire industry stands at risk of a collapse.
Hence several companies expressed their concerns about the mandate. However, it seems as though the feedback has fallen on deaf ears. A meeting chaired by NITI Aayog has asked all automotive manufacturers to come up with a plan or a roadmap as to how they would go about electrification.
A few manufacturers had asked for six months to come up with a plan, but it seems like the government is adamant about their electrification plans. The government wants a roadmap as to how each company will get to the goal of electric three-wheelers by 2023, electric two-wheelers by 2025 and electric four-wheelers by 2030.
Thoughts On Government Asking Indian Auto Companies For A Roadmap To An Electric Future
The task of making a roadmap to an electric future is not as simple as it seems. Automotive manufacturers have to consider the fact that there is no EV infrastructure at the moment, and there are no set plans given by the government for the setup of infrastructure.
Apart from this, there is the developmental factor which needs the electric vehicles to be developed enough for the people not to have range anxiety. All this takes a lot of time and the manufacturers had therefore asked for six months' time. However the government has refused it and has given a time period of just 14 days. At this moment, we aren't really sure how this is going to turn out.
