Honda Jazz EV Spotted Testing In India: Data Logging For Honda India’s EV Due In 2024?

The Honda Jazz EV has been spotted testing in India once again, and it is the exact same model that was spotted testing earlier this year. It is a pure-electric model based on the second-generation Honda Jazz and is on sale only in the American and Japanese markets.

There are very few subtle differences between the petrol/diesel powered variants and the electric variant. Most of these differences are found at the rear. It comes with a roof-mounted shark-fin antenna, a unique spoiler, and exclusive rear bumper with no exhaust pipe sticking out of it.

Adding to these little details are the exclusive alloy wheels and the blue tint on the insides of the tail-lamp. Up front is a new bumper design with no radiator grille. Instead, there is a piece of chrome that runs between the two headlamps, lending a smiling face to the front end of the Honda Jazz EV.

The premium hatchback is known as the Honda Fit in the US market and the Honda FIt EV is powered by the MCF3 electric motor that generates 123.2bhp and 256Nm. It is reported to have a range of 225 kilometres.

The Honda Fit also has a unique charging port arrangement with a fast-charging port on the left side of the vehicle and a normal charging port on the right side. It takes the car up to six hours to full charge the battery from zero through the normal charging port.

The fast-charger on the other hand takes just 20 minutes to being to battery to 80 percent. For the Indian market, Honda is planning to launch a B-segment electric car. However, the Honda Fit/Jazz sits one segment above and hence we can confidently say that it isn't being tested for a launch in India.

The Honda Jazz could be seen on test in India probably because Honda would need to do some data-logging and real-world testing in India of the electric propulsion systems that they already have.

The Honda Jazz EV spotted in India was therefore powered by the same motor as in the US, but it cannot be said for sure if Honda is actually planning to launch the car with the same motor even in the Indian market.

Indian road conditions and temperature conditions are different, therefore making a huge difference even in the driving cycle. The Honda Jazz EV seen on test here has pretty good driving range and a decent power output figure.

However, the vehicle being considered for the Indian market will have a lower power output and range. This will be done only to ensure that the car will be cheaper to manufacture so that it can in turn be priced lower too.

Thoughts On Honda Jazz EV Spotted Testing In India

The new Honda EV for India will be launched in 2023 or 2024, and therefore it is clear that there is no prototype for Honda to work with right now. But there would be a requirement for data about EVs and their behaviour in Indian conditions. Hence, Honda would have decided to work with the Honda Jazz EV to get all the data required.
