Honda's Electric Hatchback Christened 'e'; Next-Gen Jazz To Go Hybrid
Japanese carmaker Honda has confirmed that its electric hatchback that was first previewed as the Urban EV concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2017 and at this year's Geneva Motor Show as the e Prototype, will simply be called the 'e'. Honda has also confirmed that next-generation Jazz premium hatchback will feature a hybrid powertrain.
Honda had first unveiled its retro-styled electric hatchback in 2017, where as the two-door Urban EV concept it woved crowds with its old school looks and tiny size. Earlier this year, Honda revealed the 'e Prototype' at the Geneva Motor Show, which the carmaker claimed was nearly production ready. The e Protoype, toned down the design of the original Urban EV concept by adding more doors, slimming down the flared up wheel arches while also adding larger wheels.
The Honda e is quite a small car, atleast by Western standards measuring in at 3,895mm long, 1,750mm wide and 1,495mm tall. The Honda e sits on a brand new platform that Honda dedicated for electric vehicles. The height of the electric e hatchback could be a problem for quite a few people but Honda claims that it has already recived 22,000 expressions of interest in Europe alone after the e Prototype was showcased at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Honda has confirmed plans to electrify its entire range and the new e will lead the electirifcation charge for the Japanese marque.
Honda has also confirmed that the next-generation Honda Jazz, which is expected to come to India, will feature a hybrid powertrain featuring the brand's Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) technology. The next-generation of the Honda Jazz will make its debut later this year at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The electrified premium hatchback is expected to arrive in India in 2020 and the Jazz hybrid has already been spotted testing in India.
The next-gen Honda Jazz will based on the same platform as the HR-V SUV which is expected to arrive in India later this year. Reports suggest that the hybrid powertrain is expected to feature an engine around the 1.5-litre mark with a single electric motor providing assitance. The electrified powerplant will be paired with a CVT gearbox, which will send power to the front wheels.
