EV Charging Stations In India: NDMC Adds 25 Locations In Delhi

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has added 25 more EV charging stations in India at prime locations in and around Lutyens' Delhi: Jor Nagh, Sarojini Nagar Market, Gole Market, CP and Yashwant Place. The new EV charging stations will be opened by the first week of March 2019.

ET Auto says that this is the first time that a civic agency such as NDMC has installed electric vehicle charging stations in India. Last year, NDMC signed an MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) with EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Ltd) — the same company to which Tata Motors supplied the first batch of Tigor EV electric compact-sedans.

Various authorities in concern and leading automotive brands operating in India are trying their best to ensure a smooth shift from fossil-fuel-powered transportation means to efficient electric examples — check out how much India has progressed in the bid to attain e-mobility.

Speaking about the new project, NDMC Chairperson Naresh Kumar shared, "Cars of Indian brands such as Mahindra and Tata, which have already introduced a range of electric cars in markets, will have no problem at these stations. These stations will have direct current chargers which will take less time in comparison to alternating current (AC) charger to get the vehicle fully charged".

"To minimise air pollution in city, we aim to encourage people to buy more electric vehicles by simplifying process for charging them. Based on the performance of these stations, steps will be taken to scale up the number of stations in future," he further added.

As mentioned above, the new EV charging stations in New Delhi are aimed to serve Indian-made electric vehicles. Currently, there are close to 1000 electric cars in the capital city; most of which are used by government officials. To avoid an unwanted rush and related chaos at the charging stations, booking slots can be availed via the new 311 smartphone app.

"To save users from standing in long queues, we have made arrangements to accept advance booking on 311 app for charging cars while payment of bills can be made using the payment gateway system," stated another NDMC official.
