Next-Gen Honda City To Launch In March 2020 — Hybrid On The Cards?
Japanese carmaker Honda is currently working on the next-generation City sedan. Now a new report by team-bhp is claiming that development of the new City is its final stages and that the next-gen executive sedan will be launched in India in March 2020 with production starting a month earlier in February. This suggests that Honda could unveil the India-spec CIty at next year's Auto Expo, which will take place in February.
According to the report, the 2020 Honda City will be offered with a revised version of the 1.5-litre diesel engine currently found on the City. The diesel engine will be upgraded to meet BS-VI emission norms with team-bhp also claiming that the powerplant will be offered with a CVT gearbox option alongside the current 6-speed manual transmission.
The 2020 Honda City for India is expected to also retain its current 1.5-litre petrol engine, though there are reports that it could go hybrid for the new-gen sedan. Honda is said to be testing the 1.5-litre petrol engine along with two electric motors for the next-gen City. Another engine option on the cards currently being tested is a 1.0-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder petrol engine. While we expect the current 1.5-litre engine to be tweaked to meet new BS-VI emission norms, the next-gen City for India could very well go down the hybrid route as well.
The 2020 Honda City is expected to take its design cues from the Crider sedan sold in India. The Japanese carmaker had patented the Honda Crider in India last month and while the current China-exclusive sedan is not expected to make its way into India, Honda is expected to retain its styling cues for the next-gen City.
The Crider is based on a new version of the City's platform. The China-spec Crider is 4,756mm long, 1,804mm wide and 1,509mm tall. This means that the Crider is 92mm longer, 54mm wider and 4mm taller than the current City sold in India. While the next-gen City is expected to be larger than the current car however, we do not expect the new sedan to match the Crider's dimensions.
