Toyota has finally entered the midsize sedan segment by unveiling the new Yaris at Auto Expo 2018.
The Toyota Yaris is positioned between the Etios and the Corolla sedan and is expected to be launched during mid-April 2018.
The Yaris will compete with established Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and the Maruti Ciaz in India.

Design
The Toyota Yaris is slightly smaller compared to the new Hyundai Verna. The new Verna is longer by 15mm in length and 50mm in the wheelbase.
The Yaris is also shorter by 10mm compared to the new Verna. However, the Toyota Yaris is the widest among the two.

Being smaller has its advantages. The Toyota Yaris might be more comfortable to drive through challenging city driving conditions compared to the bigger Verna.
The cabin space of the Yaris could be smaller, but the sedan's width will seat three passengers abreast comfortably.
Like the Honda City, the Hyundai Verna edges out the Toyota Yaris in size. That said, the Yaris is wider compared to both.

Inside, Toyota is yet to reveal complete details of the Yaris. We expect the Toyota Yaris not to disappoint in terms of equipment level.
The Yaris comes with segment-first features such as roof-mounted AC vents for rear passengers, front parking sensors and gesture controlled touchscreen infotainment system.

The Hyundai Verna boasts of segment-first features such as hands-free boot release, cooled seats, and projector fog lamps among others.
Both the sedans seem to be well balanced in terms of features, but the Toyota Yaris could be priced competitively compared to the Hyundai Verna.

Safety
Toyota Yaris safety features to include seven airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP and Hill-start Assist. Other features include front parking sensors and a reverse parking camera.

While the safety features of both the Yaris and Verna are well equipped, the Toyota Yaris might be priced lower than the Verna.

Engine Specifications, Gearbox & Mileage
Toyota will launch the petrol version of the Yaris initially. The diesel version is expected to come at a later date.
The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated, four-cylinder, petrol unit produces 107bhp and 140Nm of torque and is mated either to a 6-speed manual or 7-step CVT automatic gearbox.

The Hyundai Verna is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine which develops 122bhp and 150Nm of torque which is paired with a 6-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
On paper, the Hyundai Verna is a lot more powerful than the Toyota Yaris. However, the Yaris is expected to deliver better mileage compared to the Verna.

The Toyota Yaris price is expected to be in the range of Rs 8.5 lakh to Rs 13.5 lakh depending upon the variants.

When it comes to pricing, Toyota is expected to launch the Yaris with an aggressive price to capture the market.

Verdict
The Toyota Yaris might not be the best looking compared to the Hyundai Verna; however, the Yaris offers excellent levels of comfort and safety for the price.
Toyota is known for its uncompromising position on safety, durability and reliability of its vehicles.
The Toyota Yaris might have a slight edge over the Hyundai Verna on paper, but the Verna is the most powerful sedan along with high level of equipment.
If you're looking for a sedan which is safer, durable, reliable and returns decent mileage, the Toyota Yaris could be your choice.
However, if you're looking for a powerful sedan and does not compromise on features and equipment level, the Hyundai Verna should be your choice of a sedan.
