Tata Motors Working On All-Electric Nexon For India — Expected Launch In 2020
Tata Motors is said to be working on an all-electric version of their Nexon model for the Indian market. The Tata Nexon electric, according to Gaadiwaadi is expected to be launched in India, sometime in 2020.
Tata Motors currently has the electric versions of the Tigor on sale in India. The company will also introduce the electric Tiago in the market soon. Both the electric Tigor and the Tiago were showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo.
The standard Nexon model has been received well in the Indian market. The SUV has been a big success for the brand, bringing in a lot of sales. Tata Motors will hope to use the success of the Nexon, to sell its electric version as well.
However, at this point, the specific details of the motor to be used on the electric Nexon is yet to be known. Although, the electric SUV is expected to use a reworked version of the motor currently used on the Tigor electric compact sedan.
Currently, the Tata Tigor electric is powered by a three-phase induction motor with 216Ah, 72v batteries. It offers a maximum range of 130km on a single charge with a top speed of 100km/h. The battery takes six hours to charge completely, however, there is a fast-charging option bringing down the charging time to just 90 mins.
In terms of design and features, the Tata Nexon electric will remain similar to the standard model. It will retain most of the exterior design, such as the front grille, projector headlamps with LED DRLS, front bumper with vertical slats for the air-dam and the front fog lamps, sporty alloy wheels, LED tail lights, roof-mounted spoiler and ORVMs with integrated turn indicators.
The similarities in design continue on to the interiors, with the floating touchscreen infotainment system, supported by Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as the three-spoke steering wheel with audio controls. The instrument cluster, however, might be revised to meet the requirements of the electric version.
Thoughts On The Tata Nexon Electric
The Tata Nexon has been a highly successful model for the brand in the country. The Nexon SUV is offered in both petrol and diesel variants and comes with an AMT gearbox as well. The Tata Nexon electric, once launched in India will be priced at a slight premium to the regular model.
