South Korean automaker Kia is all set to make its India entry at the Auto Expo 2018 and will commence its operations in the country by mid-2019. Kia will be showcasing several models from its global product portfolio at the upcoming auto show alongside several other established players.
Now, Autocar India reports that, apart from the currently available models, Kia will also reveal a new SUV concept, which will be manufactured in India and will go on sale in 2019. The report also states that the concept will be a full-size SUV. Apart from that, there are no details revealed about the new SUV.
But the new concept SUV is expected to be a five-seater vehicle which will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta. The new SUV is likely to feature a bold design language similar to the current-gen Kia models, especially with the design cues of the Stonic. Apart from the concept, Kia will showcase several other models. Here are the complete details of the new Kia cars at Auto Expo 2018.
The Kia Picanto is a small hatchback similar to the Hyundai Grand i10 sold in the Indian market. In fact, the global-spec Grand i10 and the Picanto are built on the same platform. But dimensionally, the Picanto is slightly smaller than the Grand i10. In the international markets, the Picanto is offered with a 1-litre petrol engine producing 67bhp and 95Nm of torque.
The Kia Rio is the Hyundai i20 rival from the stable of the Korean automaker. The hatchback is just over four metres and measures 4,065mm. There is also a possibility of Kia trimming the length of the car, to be under four metres. The international-spec Kia Rio is powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine churning out 84bhp and 122Nm of torque.
Kia is betting high on the Sportage SUV which will rival the likes of Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson, Volkswagen Tiguan and Honda CR-V. To justify its bold looks and road presence, the SUV comes powered with a 2-litre diesel engine churning out 185bhp and 402Nm of torque.
The Cerato is a sedan which is being sold as Forte in the US market. In India, it will lock horns with the likes of Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic and Skoda Octavia. The sedan comes equipped with a 1.6-litre petrol engine producing 130bhp and 157Nm of torque. The engine is coupled to a six-speed gearbox.
The Kia Optima is a premium sedan with striking looks and spacious cabin. The large sedan will rival the likes of well-established players in the Indian market such as Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and Skoda Superb. In the global market, the Optima draws power from a 2-litre petrol engine producing 143bhp and 204Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.
The Kia Niro is a smart crossover with stylish exterior design and premium interior which can accommodate five people. Kia retails the Niro as a hybrid model in the international markets but India is likely to get the internal combustion engine only. The global-spec Niro is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol engine coupled to an electric motor.
The Sorento is the flagship SUV from the stable of Kia offered in a seven-seater configuration. To make things interesting, the SUV has been spotted in Andhra Pradesh near the company's manufacturing facility. In the global market, the Sorento is offered with 2.2-litre petrol and 2-litre diesel engine producing 188bhp and 185bhp respectively. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic and an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Kia has already announced that the sporty Stinger sedan will not be sold in the Indian market. But it could be displayed at the upcoming Auto Expo. Kia will begin its India operations with a compact sedan which is unlikely to make it to the Auto Expo 2018.
