New Force Gurkha Xtreme Vs Mahindra Thar Comparison: Design, Specifications, Features And Price
Indian utility vehicle manufacturer Force Motors is all set to launch a new variant of the Gurkha named as Force Gurkha Xtreme. The Force Gurkha Xtreme will be based on the Gurkha Xplorer variant and will feature subtle changes to the design and mechanical components.
The Force Gurkha Xtreme is likely to be the top-spec model. The Gurkha Xtreme is expected to be launched in the coming days. Mahindra Thar is the only competitor for the Force Gurkha Xtreme in the Indian market.
So, how does the Force Gurkha Xtreme fare against the Mahindra Thar? Let's find out in this detailed comparison of the Force Gurkha Xtreme and Mahindra Thar on design, specifications, off-roading capabilities and price.
Design
The Force Gurkha Xtreme looks similar to the currently sold Gurkha Xplorer and features a single slat front grille, classic round headlamp and heavy-duty bumper. The side profile features body cladding on the wheel arches and the Gurkha branding. The rear profile of the off-roader also comes with a heavy-duty bumper, high-mounted stop lamp and a spare wheel.
The Mahindra Thar features a retro design inspired by the Willys Jeep. The front fascia of the off-road SUV features classic round headlamps, heavy-duty bumper and vertical-slat grille. The side profile is simple with a two-door layout.
The Mahindra Thar is offered only with a soft top and the rear profile features a spare wheel and a rugged bumper.

Engine, Specifications And Gearbox
The prominent highlight of the Force Gurkha Xtreme is the new engine. The Gurkha Xtreme will draw power from an all-new 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine churning out 138bhp and 321Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox with a 4x4 transfer case with high and low options and differential lock.
The Mahindra Thar is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine that produces 105bhp and 247Nm of torque. The engine is coupled to a 5-speed manual gearbox with a 4x4 transfer case with high and low reduction gear. On the paper, the Force Gurkha Xtreme is more powerful than the Mahindra Thar.

Off-Roading Capability
The Force Gurkha Xtreme will be a hardcore off-roader as compared to the Xplorer version of the SUV. The Gurkha Xtreme sports a ground clearance of 205mm. The Gurkha also gets a wider track which stands at 1,530mm.
The approach, departure and ramp breakover angles for the Force Gurkha Xtreme stands at 44 degrees, 35 degrees and 28 degrees, respectively.
On the other hand, the Mahindra Thar's ground clearance stands at 200mm. The approach, departure and ramp breakover angles of the Thar measures 44 degrees, 27 degrees and 28 degrees, respectively.
The Force Gurkha Xtreme edges out the Mahindra Thar in terms of off-roading capabilities on paper. But we really cannot comment about the real-world performance of both the off-roader SUVs.
Features
The off-roading SUVs are not known for their features and they are equipped with bare minimum comfort features. The Gurkha Xtreme will be offered in both hard-top and soft top versions. The interior of the Gurkha feels outdated but offers better ergonomics in terms of controls and switches. Other features include air-conditioning and power steering.
The Mahindra Thar features a more premium interior with dual-tone treatment for the dashboard. But the fit and finish average. The Force Gurkha Xtreme might feature few additional bits to outgun the Thar.

Price
The Force Gurkha Xtreme is expected to get a price hike with the introduction of the new engine. The Gurkha Xtreme is likely to be priced at around Rs 14 lakh on-road. The Mahindra Thar is priced at Rs 9.24 lakh ex-showroom (Delhi) making it cheaper than the Force Gurkha Xtreme.
Verdict
On paper, the Force Gurkha Xtreme is a better off-roader than the Mahindra Thar. But as the vehicle is not yet launched, it would be inappropriate to comment on the performance and off-roading capabilities of both the SUVs. But with the cult following for Mahindra, the Thar will retain its position in India and the Force Gurkha Xtreme has to be really good to beat the Thar.
