Maruti Suzuki Crosses 20 Million Production Milestone In India

The company which first started production in December 1983, has achieved the production milestone after 34 years and five months. The 20 millionth car, the Swift was manufactured at Suzuki's new Sanand plant in Gujarat.

India is the second country after Japan, where Suzuki Motors have achieved this milestone. However, India beat Japan's record for time taken in reaching the production milestone.

Japan took 45 years and nine months to reach the 20 million production number.

Out of the 20 million units produced in India, the Alto had the highest production numbers at 3.17 million units. Second, came the Maruti 800 at 2.91 million, followed by the WagonR at third with 2.16 million units produced.

Suzuki Motors first started production in India back in December 1983. Their first production model was the Maruti 800, by Maruti Udyog. Which was the former company of the current Maruti Suzuki.

Since then, production units and models were increased to keep up with the demand of the growing economy of India.

Today Maruti Suzuki produces its models at both the Manesar Plant in Gurgaon and the Sanand Plant in Gujarat. Maruti Suzuki is the Japanese carmaker's 100 percent subsidiary to produce automobiles in India.

Maruti Suzuki first reached the 1 million production mark in March 1994. The 5 million production milestone came later in April 2005. The 10 and 15 million production milestone came in quick succession in March 2011 and May 2015 respectively. With the 20 millionth milestone taking just three years to achieve.
