Highway Speed Limits To Be Increased To 100km/h Soon
Highway speed limits will soon be increased in India. 120km/h on expressways, 100km/h on national highways for cars will soon come into effect. Speed limits for motorcycles will also be increased to 8
Highway speed limits for passenger cars to be increased soon. The speed limit on expressways will be increased from 100km/h to 120km/h for cars, while national highway speed limits will go up from 80km/h to 100 km/h.

The Road Ministry stated that for the first time, they will set up speed regulations within municipal limits. Although, the speed regulations in municipal limits can only be implemented if even the states are on-board.

The speed limits for motorcycles has been set to 80km/h on expressways and highways. Roads in the municipal limits, will have 70km/h and 60km/h set as the speed limits for cars and motorcycles respectively. For heavy vehicles, speed limits set: 100km/h on expressways, 90km/h on highways and 60km/h on roads within municipal limits.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari proposed the idea to increase speed limits in the month of June last year. Necessitated thanks to improved highways infrastructure and vehicle technologies.

A committee was later setup which further recommended the need to revise speed limits. Gadkari approved the revised speed limits on Wednesday. The ministry has also planned to build 1000kms of access-controlled expressways across India in the next 5 - 7 years.
Thoughts On Increased Highway Speed Limits In India

It is true that the infrastructure of highways in India is developing at a fast pace, however, India still has the high number of road accidents. It will be worth seeing how the government will tackle road safety concerns once the higher speed limits are implemented.
