Electric Vehicles To Get Green Number Plates
To promote the use of electric vehicles in India, the government has finally approved the use of green number plates. The green number plates will distinguish the electric vehicles from the conventional internal combustion vehicles on the road.
The private electric vehicles will bear a green number plate with the white text while the commercial electric vehicles will get the green background and yellow text. The green number plate rule will be applicable to all zero-emission vehicles including electric buses and other commercial electric vehicles plying on Indian roads.
Currently, Tata Motors and Mahindra are the only automakers to offer electric cars for both private and commercial sectors. With the green number plate, it will be easier to identify electric vehicles. The government has also proposed other benefits for electric vehicles in the country.
The proposed benefits for electric vehicles include preference in parking lots, free entry in congested zones and concession in tolls on the current road networks. For commercial electric vehicles, the government is considering an exemption from permits.
The exemption from permits will boost the sales of electric rickshaws, electric buses and electric cars, especially in urban areas. The notification for the use of green number plates will be issued within a week. The green number plates are expected to boost the use of electric vehicles in the country.
Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari said, "The government has approved distinctive green licence plates for electric vehicles to encourage people to use electric vehicles. Such vehicles will be fitted with green licence plates bearing numbers in white fonts for private cars and yellow font for taxis."
Apart from green number plates, the government is also considering to allow youth in the age group of 16-18 years to ride electric scooters without a licence. Currently, the youth between 16-18 years are allowed to ride moped below 50cc. And ironically, there is no two-wheeler below 50cc in the Indian market.
Thoughts On The Green Number Plates For Electric Vehicles
The government's move of approving green number plates for electric vehicles will be crucial for the growth of electric vehicles in the country. With the green number plates, it will be easy to identify zero-emission vehicles on the road. If the government exempts the commercial electric vehicles from permit, it will be an added bonus for electric vehicles in India.
