BBMP Identifies 42 New Roads In Bangalore For White-Topping — Brace Yourself For More Traffic Jams!
Bangalore civic body, BBMP has identified 42 new roads under the second phase, for white-topping.
BBMP (Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike) has decided on an additional 42 roads in the city to be concretised. BBMP has called for fresh tenders for white-topping of the newly identified roads, which is reportedly valued at Rs 641 crore.
BBMP is yet to complete the white-toppings from their previous 2016-17 grants. Reports suggest that the civic body is yet to finish white-topping even 15 percent of these previously identified roads.
Bangalore Traffic Police, a few months ago denied permission for white-topping the roads. They argued that the white-topping work by BBMP had continuously failed to meet deadlines and was creating serious traffic situations around the city.
This time around, the civic body is said take up white toppings of all 42 new roads simultaneously. This according to them will help meet the deadlines. BBMP source says that they have now set a deadline of 15 months to complete the work.
Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, K T Nagaraj, Chief Engineer, Project Central, BBMP, stated, "We had to experience a lot of opposition from the public and other departments due to the slow pace of work. It was also the first time this kind of road work was being done in the city. But now that we're wiser from the experience, we have set strict conditions for the bidders to complete the assigned work within the deadline."
The last date for submitting tenders for white-topping is fixed for the 20 September. BBMP is scheduled to begin work on all 42 new locations, once the tender is issued.
N Manjunatha Prasad, BBMP Chief said that the civic body has understood their mistakes from the previous 2016-17 grants. Therefore, the newly selected roads are major roads, with alternate routes, hence ensuring a smoother and quicker completion of work. He further added that to maintain longevity, all the major roads in the city will be concretised.

BBMP, the city's main civic body had selected 53 roads in the previous year. However, they were unable to complete even 15 percent of the total roads. The white-topping of the roads have affected a lot of commuters in the city, with the BBMP even facing sharp criticism from the public.
